Chapter Text

Rain fell in thin, whispering ribbons over the tall gates of St. Dominic's Prep, a school where students didn't walk to survive the day - they calculated odds. The grounds were perfectly manicured, the hallways polished marble, the uniforms tailored like military attire. Everyone walked with purpose, not because of academic pressure but because a misplaced step could be the difference between authority and servitude.

Inside those wrought-iron gates, a hierarchy ruled:
Winners became Council. Losers became pets.
Money, power, secrets - each wager reveled in the cruelty of what it could destroy.

At 8:02 AM, the atmosphere shifted.

A black luxury car rolled up the pathway. Windows tinted. No crest. No status tag. When the door opened, the first thing students saw was an umbrella - jet black, matching the polished shoes that stepped out onto the glistening pavement.

Yumeko Kawamoto emerged with quiet elegance. Dark hair falling past her shoulders, uniform worn with precision yet softness. Her eyes - crimson in the reflection of the rain - carried a strange calm. There was no hesitation in her walk.

Just calculated freedom.

Unlike every other student, she had no rank beside her name tag.

Just: "Kawamoto, Yumeko - Transfer."

She walked into the main lobby. Conversations silenced.

From the balcony above, three figures watched.

Kira Timurov, Student Council President - famous, untouchable, and terrifyingly composed - leaned one hand on the railing, her eyes like winter.
Beside her, Riri Timurov, silent shadow, observed with little to no visible expression.
Further down the corridor stood Suki Hennessey, whispering something wicked under her breath.

Kira said nothing. But her gaze lingered.

Longer than she ever allowed anyone else to hold her focus.

Be careful, newcomer.

You're entering my game.

---

In Room 3A, the morning class began. Desks sat arranged like business cubicles more than a classroom. Screens on each wall displayed live rank changes from ongoing bets across the school.

Students whispered about debts, status trades, ruined reputations.

Yumeko stepped inside.

The teacher - Ms. Koval, young, tired eyes - cleared her throat.

"Class, this is your new peer... Yumeko Kawamoto. She transferred this semester."

The room stayed quiet.

Someone in the back murmured, "...Poor soul."

Another whispered, "She doesn't know. She'll be eaten alive."

But one person did not whisper. He just stared.

Ryan Adebayo.

He held his pencil loosely, his uniform slightly unkempt - a boy purposely trying not to stand out in a school where standing out meant danger. He didn't play the gambling games. Not willingly, not proudly. But he also hadn't lost. He just... avoided.

And yet, something about Yumeko intrigued him.

She met his eyes once.

And smiled.

Not gently.

Not cruelly.

But knowingly.

---

"Seat next to Ryan," Ms. Koval motioned.

Yumeko took it, placing her notebook down neatly.

Ryan coughed lightly, unsure if he should greet her.

"You're new," he eventually said.

She turned her head, slow, deliberate.

"Yes." A pause. "Isn't that thrilling?"

He blinked. "Thrilling?"

"In coming here," she said, hands folded, "I agreed to gamble everything, did I not?"

Ryan stared.

"You... you know what this place is?"

"I know enough," she replied, amused. "And I'm eager to learn the rest."

He didn't understand her yet.

But he'd remember that sentence.

---

Behind them, making quiet notes on his tablet, sat Michael Adams.

His expression was unreadable, but his posture masked tension. Unlike Ryan, Michael did understand who Yumeko was. Or at least what she represented.

His father - once deeply involved with kakegurui "club" board of the school - had whispered a name to him months ago, before things went wrong.

Kawamoto.

Michael's jaw tightened.

This was no random transfer.

This was the first move.

---

Lunch period.

Most new students avoided attention.

Yumeko walked straight into it.

Cafeteria whispers erupted as she selected a vacant table near the center.

A group approached - Dori Ahlstrom, eyes wide and unnervingly fixed; Chad White, smiling like he'd bet on being irresistible; and Runa Von Ludwig, slow pace like a predator with a stitch costume.

"You're sitting in a Council-preferred zone," Dori said calmly, but her eyes flickered violently. "New students don't do that."

"Oh," Yumeko said, looking around as though she had just realized she was being watched by most of the cafeteria. "Is this seat taken by someone's ego?"

Ryan choked on air.

Michael lifted his gaze, intrigued.

Silence.

Then Chad smirked. "Bold. Wanna make it interesting?"

Runa stepped forward, toying with her lollipop. "Fifty thousand. Dice roll. High wins. If you lose, you move to the back table with the pets for the rest of the week."

"Or," Dori hissed, "I could make your status zero."

Students gasped.

A first-day pet status was a social execution.

Yumeko tilted her head.

"High stakes for a beginner," she noted. "Then again..."

Her fingers tapped the table once.

"...I've always preferred to make a statement."

She took the dice.

Without hesitation, she rolled.

Double six.

A soft sound escaped Chad's lips. Runa froze.

Yumeko squealed and her eyes glistened.

"Looks like luck favors confidence," she said, pushing the dice forward whilst smiling. "Shall we play again next time for something truly valuable?"

Dori stared at her with unsettling admiration.

They retreated.

Ryan whispered to himself, "She... won?"

Michael closed his tablet.

It begins.

---

Above, in the council surveillance lounge, screens replayed the video feed.

Suki bit her thumbnail, annoyed. "She's too confident."

Riri only said, softly, "Dangerous."

Kira stood beside them, silent.

She replayed the scene.

Not just the roll.

The expression.

That calm.

That familiarity with risk.

It reminded her of something she fought hard to bury.

She finally spoke.

"Track her games. Every interaction. Every amount she wagers."

Suki nodded.

Riri simply whispered, "She sees the board already."

Kira's eyes never left the screen.

"No," she corrected. "She walked in with her own board."

---

Classes ended.

Yumeko walked down the west wing hallway, alone.

She felt the shift before she saw it - silence where there should be chatter.

From the shadows emerged Kira Timurov.

Perfect posture. Unreadable expression. Hands clasped behind her back.

Students cleared the area instantly.

Yumeko stopped exactly 2.5 meters before Kira.

Neither spoke.

For a long while, that silence screamed louder than any argument.

Finally, Kira broke it.

"You made quite the debut, Kawamoto."

"It's always best to start with clarity," Yumeko replied.

"You rolled," Kira said. "Dice. A game of luck."

"Is it?" Yumeko questioned, tilting her head. "Or does the outcome reflect intent?"

Kira stepped forward.

"Hope," she said quietly, "is the most expensive currency here. I suggest you don't gamble with it."

Yumeko matched her step.

"Then what do you gamble with, President?"

Kira held her gaze.

"Everything else."

Yumeko's lips curved slowly.

"Then we have something in common."

The air tightened - like the moment before a card flips.

Kira noted the glint in Yumeko's eyes.

She didn't fear her.

She anticipated her.

There was something terrifying in that fact.

And something electric.

---

Kira Timurov, later that night, staring at the surveillance screen replay.

"She didn't walk in to compete...
She walked in to rearrange the table."

...So let her try. And if she wants to bet everything...
I'll be the one she has to gamble against last.

Yumeko Kawamoto, alone in her dorm, staring at an old photo tucked under her pillow.

"Almost there."
"Almost close enough to take everything from them."
"Even if it means risking myself."

The thunder outside cracked like shuffling cards.

Somewhere in the darkness, two queens had just been dealt into the same hand.

And neither planned to fold.
