Work Text:
"Hey, you fucking nerd!" Katsuki yelled at Izuku at the front gate of the school. He approached Izuku, who was evidently afraid and confused if his stiff body language was any clue. "I'm taking you out tonight. So don't make any other fucking plans after school."
That was how Katsuki remembered asking Izuku out. Not his best work, but it would do. He probably should've stayed to see Izuku's reaction but that would be a problem for later. The other boy hadn't come back to reject him yet, so that was a good sign already.
Katsuki glanced up at the clock on the classroom wall once more, leaning forward with his head in his hand and elbow resting on his desk. Consequently it would be their first date as well. He figured he might as well make Izuku's birthday special, seeing how the nerd worked so hard to try to make his special.
Though school was getting in the way of that. He'd rather have done it earlier in the day, but it would have to wait until tonight.
The two started hanging out again after what happened on Katsuki's birthday. Being forced to spend an afternoon with Izuku and actually talk to him made him realize he may or may not, but probably does even though he denies it and would never admit it openly, actually like spending time with him. Eventually he decided he wanted to try dating Izuku. They were almost pretty much doing that anyway. So it could only get better from here, right?
What a fucking joke, Katsuki complained in his head. It was nearing the end of the day, but nothing interesting happened during class at all today. Everyone was just quietly studying for an upcoming test Aizawa warned them of while the old man rested in his sleeping bag behind the desk.
He slammed his forehead down on the desk, covering his head with his arms and resisting the urge to groan. The act garnered the attention of a few nearby students, and he could feel their eyes on him, but Katsuki refused to care or give them his attention. He didn't care about any of them right now.
He poked his head up and glanced towards Izuku's desk, who was already staring at him from his earlier action. Izuku gave him an awkward half smile and a small wave, and then flinched when Katsuki blew a quick puff of air out of his nose and laid his head in his arms again.
Izuku didn't really know what to think when Katsuki approached him this morning in front of the school gate and told him they'd be going out tonight. Was he only doing it because of what Izuku did on Katsuki's birthday? Was it because he was being forced to do something nice by his parents again?
Izuku found it hard to believe he was doing it out of his own volition. Not impossible, but hard to believe. This was Katsuki after all.
He glanced up at the clock on the wall. He was nervous, obviously, but a good kind of nervous. Katsuki wouldn't be mean to him today, right? So there shouldn't be anything to be afraid of.
The moment the bell rang a handful of students wasted no time in leaving right away. No doubt they wanted to get to the festival that was in town early. Izuku hoped Katsuki would be taking him there, too. But he would be happy going wherever with the other. It wasn't often he got to hang out with Katsuki without the threat of violence looming over the pair.
Once he finished packing his things he looked around the room for the other, but saw he was already gone. He prepared to run to catch up to him and ask a few questions but was stopped by Ochako and Tenya at his desk.
"Deku! Do you want to come to the festival with us?" Ochako asked excitedly, a hopeful look on her face.
"Ah, I can't. I'm, uh... I-I have plans with someone else," Izuku answered shyly, looking away and rubbing the back of his head. He didn't know if he should reveal who, as it might cause paranoia among his friends, but someone might end up seeing the two of them out together anyway right? He didn't know if Katsuki wanted other people to know either, though.
Maybe keep it quiet just in case...
"But isn't today your birthday?" Tenya questioned. "We want to do something special for your birthday."
"I totally understand guys. And we can definitely do something another day! But... Tonight is kind of important for me. I don't want to miss it. How about we go tomorrow?"
Izuku was happy to see his attempt at reasoning with them worked when the duo nodded and left. He wanted to hang out with them for sure, but he could do things with them any time. Having a completely peaceful night out with Katsuki was a rare opportunity he didn't intend to pass up.
He put on his backpack and walked out of the room to go home for now. Katsuki would probably be too far away to go running after him now. And if he wanted to walk home together he would've waited anyway, right?
Izuku just wished he knew some details about tonight. Mainly like what time they were even leaving, something Katsuki neglected to mention. Or if they would be meeting up somewhere.
...Or anything about the evening at all.
I guess I'll get ready and wait at home? Izuku thought to himself, exiting the building and heading for his apartment.
Katsuki opened the door to his home, kicking off his shoes in the entryway and dropping his backpack beside them. His parents greeted him and he replied with a silent wave, walking directly past them and straight to his room. Once inside he began stripping down to change clothes. He didn't want to waste time or wait until the last minute to do that, even if he had a couple of hours to kill.
Once he was down to his underwear his door opened and he immediately threw a nearby textbook at the intruder.
"Fucking knock first you bitch!" Katsuki yelled, already knowing who was barging in without any warning at all. His mom always did this, and she always used the same argument whenever he got mad.
"Calm down you little shit!" she shouted back, catching the textbook and ducking under the notebook that followed immediately after. One more notebook was thrown and she swatted it away. "I raised you and changed your diapers. You don't have anything on your body I haven't seen before."
Regardless of his embarrassment Katsuki didn't bother covering himself, standing in an aggressive stance with his fists balled up and teeth bared. She wouldn't be intimidated, though, as she knew her son would never seriously fight back.
"The fuck do you want?" Katsuki growled out, storming to his closet and jerking it open. He still hated the fact she didn't respect his privacy like he's yelled at her a hundred times to. His father has tried to reason with him, saying if he asked instead of yelled he might get different results, but Katsuki was always too angry when it came up to bother with the former option.
"Don't ask me. This morning you said you wanted to talk to me when you got home. So what is it?"
Katsuki pulled out a pair of jeans and slipped into them, pulling the zipper up and snatching a belt off the floor. "Yeah. I need money."
"Don't just demand it like you deserve whatever you want!" she yelled at him.
"I didn't fucking demand it! I just told you what I need!" Katsuki yelled back, balling his fists up at his side and turning to glare at her with his belt only half looped around his pants.
She scoffed and waved her hand dismissively. Her mistake. "Fine. What do you need it for?"
"None of your business," Katsuki answered, returning to looping his belt around his pants.
"Then you're not getting any money."
Katsuki glared at her again as he finished with his belt. The two stared each other down for a long while before Katsuki turned his attention to the wall.
"Dad! I need money for tonight!"
"Ask your mother," he called back, and Katsuki's mom smirked at him while crossing her arms. Katsuki stomped his foot childishly.
"What does it fucking matter what I need it for?! I'm just going out damn it!" Katsuki screamed. His mother shook her head disapprovingly and turned to leave, but all Katsuki saw was his chance to take Izuku out walking away. "Wait, wait! Damn it, fine!"
She stopped and glanced over her shoulder with an expectant look, keeping her arms crossed. "Keep talking in that tone and you won't get anything either."
Katsuki bared his teeth at her again and spoke lowly, almost threateningly through his gritted teeth. "I need it to go on a fucking date tonight."
She perked up significantly at that and smiled deviously. "Oooh, a lucky little girl huh? Actually she must be unlucky sense it's you. You didn't force her into it, did you?"
Katsuki held back the urge to punch a wall and emit an explosion at her. He wouldn't let her get to him today. "No I didn't fucking force him into it. Are you going to give me money or do I need to go beg on the goddamn street for some?"
"Oh, a boy? Sorry for the assumption," she said with her smile softening. "Yeah you can have some money. I'll leave it on the coffee table. Make sure you're back before midnight."
He huffed in response, glad that was over with, and turned around to grab a grey T-shirt. When he felt a pair of eyes on him he looked over his shoulder to see her still standing there, staring at him.
"The fuck do you want now?"
"Just counting the seconds in my head. The longer you don't thank me the less money you get."
Katsuki dropped the shirt and spun on his heels to face her with a panicked expression. "Thank you! Fucking thank you! Okay?!"
She looked at the watch on her wrist with a smirk before she left with a small wave. "Well you didn't lose much at least."
Fucking hate her, Katsuki thought angrily, glaring at the doorway. He didn't actually hate her per se, but she sure did piss him off. A lot.
He picked up the grey T-shirt and put it on, grabbing a black button up shirt that he would leave unbuttoned over his T-shirt. Now he just needed to kill two hours.
Izuku spent the next hour and a half with his mom. When he entered the apartment she'd apparently been waiting on the other side of the door with a party popper and set it off the moment he opened the door. It scared him, but they both laughed it off regardless. They talked on the couch for a while before she brought him into the kitchen to show him the cake she made.
"Actually I'm going out with a friend tonight. But I don't know what we're going to do, so maybe I shouldn't eat in case we go somewhere that has food, you know? But I'll definitely have some later."
"Oh, is it Bakugou? He's been so much nicer to you these past three months I almost didn't recognize him! Is it a date?" Inko questioned relentlessly, ushering Izuku to sit at the table to talk.
"Wh-what?" A date?
...Was it a date?
...
No. Katsuki wouldn't take him on a date date.
"I don't think so, mom. I'm pretty sure we're just hanging out for a while. But he didn't tell me where we’re going. Or when we were leaving. Or anything at all..."
"Sure sounds like a date," Inko pressed on, poking Izuku in his side twice. "If it wasn't he would've said where you were going like always, wouldn't he?"
Izuku laughed quietly when his side was poked and swatted at her finger. "Stop mom! I don't think it's a date. He didn't say it was one."
"Well, I hope you both have a fun time anyway. You should go get ready if you don't know when he'll be here. Go on," Inko said, shooing him away.
"Alright, alright," Izuku responded, shielding himself from her shooing motions as he went. He didn't really know what to dress for anyway. Probably just wear something casual. There was no way they'd go somewhere fancy or anything. A pair of tan shorts and a red T-shirt should do.
Right when his head came through the neck hole of the shirt the doorbell rang and he ran out of his room to peek his head around the corner, seeing Katsuki standing in the doorway talking to his mom.
Inko turned around to call for Izuku, but spotted him looking around the corner. "It's Bakugou, Izuku."
"Give me just a sec, Kacchan," Izuku called out and Katsuki sighed while looking every which way but in the house. Inko offered for him to come in, but he declined saying he would just have to walk right back out. So she told him to have fun and left him in the doorway.
A few more seconds passed by and Izuku came running around the corner, putting on his shoes in the entryway and tying them before shouting a 'be back later' to his mother and shutting the door.
"So where are we going, Kacchan?" Izuku asked, beaming at the other and waiting anxiously for the answer to the big mystery that’s been on his mind all day.
"To the movies. Here," Katsuki said, pulling a chocolate cupcake with white icing out from behind his back and holding it out for Izuku to take. "Happy birthday, Deku."
Izuku took the cupcake and wasted no time peeling the wrapping off, practically bouncing in place. "Thank you, Kacchan!"
Katsuki held back an amused smirk at Izuku's childish behavior and grabbed his arm, pulling him forward. "Yeah, yeah. Let's go already."
Izuku squeaked as he was jerked forward, taking quick steps to avoid falling while catching up to Katsuki's side.
On the way to the movies he ate the cupcake happily, taking small bites as Katsuki would sneak glances at him to see the cute face he'd make while chewing. Izuku never seemed to notice, evidently more interested in their surroundings.
Once the pair arrived at the movies Katsuki pointed up to the posters that showed what was showing.
"What do you want to see?"
"You didn't have something in mind?" Izuku questioned while crumpling the cupcake wrapper in his hand and looking around for a trashcan.
"It's your fucking birthday. You should get to choose what you spend the next two hours watching," Katsuki argued.
Izuku looked over the posters one by one and pointed at the one closest to them.
"I haven't gotten to see that yet. Even though I really want to. Can we watch that?" Izuku questioned, looking over to Katsuki with a smile.
"I said we'll watch whatever you want, didn't I?" Katsuki replied, heading towards the counter to purchase their tickets. He stopped just in front of the counter and looked up to see how much popcorn and drinks would cost. "Two for, uh," he paused while he looked over his shoulder to the poster Izuku pointed at before, "Inside Out. One medium popcorn and two large drinks, one of them a water."
"Ah! Kacchan, I didn't bring any money though," Izuku said as he approached the counter, having just thrown away the cupcake wrapper. He dug through his pockets and pulled them out to show they were completely empty.
"S'fine. I'm paying for it. Just say what you want," Katsuki responded without looking at the other, causing Izuku to grin. "The popcorn is for both of us."
"Really? Wow, cool. Um, just water please."
Katsuki paid the woman behind the counter and handed one of the tickets and large cups of water to Izuku. They showed their tickets to the usher who told them which theater to go to and made their way inside.
Katsuki didn't pay full attention to the movie the entire time. It didn't seem like the kind of thing he was interested in. He spent most of the time listening to Izuku whisper things to him about the movie and making little jokes. Katsuki let Izuku keep the popcorn in his lap and would always wait for Izuku to offer him some before getting any. He wanted Izuku to have as much as he wanted first and foremost. If it was any other day he'd have kept it in his own lap, but today was supposed to be Izuku's day.
Often he'd just watch Izuku and enjoy how happy the other appeared to be through most of the movie. He didn't know Izuku was happier that Katsuki was spending time with him than he was about the movie though.
Once the movie was over they exited the theatre. Katsuki kept his hands in his pockets and Izuku was practically bouncing with each step.
"I really liked the movie, Kacchan! Some of it made me think about you, too."
That caught Katsuki's interest. He glanced at Izuku from the corner of his eyes and then looked back down at the sidewalk as they kept walking.
"Like what?"
"Well mainly the emotions made me think of people. Like Uraraka and Ashido would both definitely be Joy. I think Jirou would be Disgust and Kouda would be Fear. And you're definitely Anger," Izuku explained, trying to think of what classmates would be who.
"Fuck you!" Katsuki shouted. He expected something good to be said, not that.
"See?" Izuku said while holding back a laugh. "Anger is definitely the leader of your emotions! You need to calm down, Kacchan's Anger."
Katsuki growled as Izuku talked to the 'emotions' inside his head. He stopped himself from laughing, too, when the image of a small red man angrily smashing buttons on a console in his head appeared in his mind. If he thought about it rationally, Izuku was probably correct.
"It's okay though. I wouldn't want you to change or anything, Kacchan," Izuku said while elbowing Katsuki softly. "I still think you're cool. Even if you do get mad too much."
Katsuki swatted weakly at Izuku's face, smacking him playfully on the nose in response as Izuku flinched and tried to cover his face from any follow-up attacks.
"Yeah? Well then yours is Fear. You're always too damn scared," Katsuki said, shoving his hand back in his pocket. He knew he had the biggest role of all in putting Fear in charge of Izuku's console, so to speak.
"Nuh uh," Izuku argued, holding his nose for a moment after Katsuki smacked it. "I want to be joy."
"Doesn't fucking matter what you want to be. You're Fear," Katsuki argued, glaring at him. "You always flinch at everything and get scared of your own fucking shadow."
Izuku glared back, but knew that was mostly true. But he's been getting more confident lately. It was only bit by bit, but he was getting there. His glare dropped with Katsuki gave him a small smile, though, as he couldn't stop himself from smiling back.
They walked the rest of the way in silence, Katsuki walking Izuku all the way up to his apartment door. Izuku grabbed the doorknob and waved back at Katsuki.
"Thanks for taking me out tonight, Kacchan! I really enjoyed the movie," Izuku said with a grin. He tried to open the door but stopped when Katsuki grabbed onto his wrist.
"Hey," he called out softly, staring off to the side thoughtfully and biting his bottom lip. "Can I take you out again sometime? On another date?"
"Another date?" Izuku questioned, confused by his wording. Had they gone on a first date already? Then what his mom said earlier dawned on him. "W-wa-wait... Th-this was a date?!"
Katsuki stared at him now as Izuku turned fully around to stare at him. Both had shocked looks on their faces.
He didn't know it was a fucking date?
This was a real date?!
Both of them stared at each other in shock for what felt like forever until Katsuki's hand retreated to his pocket. He hunched his shoulders and looked away again.
Might as well go on with it now...
"Yeah. I thought you knew it was a first date. I was taking you out out. So can I fuckin' do it again or what?"
Izuku stared at Katsuki incredulously. He knew they'd been close friends the past three months, but to just suddenly take him on a date like that? And ask for another? Not that he had a bad time or anything on this one but he didn't even know it was one to begin with. It also wouldn't be a bad first date if he counted it as one.
With that in mind…
"...Y-yeah. We can go out again," Izuku finally answered after a long pause. "But I want a different birthday present then, Kacchan."
"It's like 9 fucking pm! The fuck do you want me to get you?!"
Izuku grabbed Katsuki's hand and grinned at him. "A first kiss to go with my first date? If that's okay. Please?"
Katsuki's eyes widened and he was suddenly very consciously aware of his heart beating hard in his chest. That wasn't part of the plan for tonight, but he supposed it could be added on. If only because Izuku said please.
"Fine." He stepped forward and grabbed Izuku's other hand, tilting his head to the side and pressing their lips together for a chaste kiss. It lasted for a good few seconds before he pulled back and they smiled at each other, staying close together.
"Do you want to come in for cake? Mom made one and I bet she'd let you have a piece if you asked nicely," Izuku offered. After a moment of thought Katsuki nodded and Izuku led him inside.
