I love you

Summary:

Rain poured down from the heavens onto the cold tiles of the sidewalk. The streetlights only just barely illuminating the street, the lightbulbs inside giving an occasional flicker as yo walked. In your hands was a worn-down black umbrella, your pale fingers tightly wrapped around the handle. You forgot where you wanted to go at this point. Maybe you wanted some fresh air, maybe you wanted to go to the bar again, you don't know, you go where your feet take you.

Notes:

‘Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.’
(A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Act 1, Scene 1)

-

I made this with the song 'I love you' by fontaine D.C in mind

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Nowadays, you see no color in life anymore. Maybe your work has jaded you too much, or maybe the number of corpses on the streets is finally getting to you. Either way, it's getting too quiet on the streets. Way too quiet. It's bothering you, but you know you can't change any of it. The only thing you can do is make living here more bearable for yourself.

After some more mindless walking, you find that your feet took you to some old park you used to frequent a year or two ago. It's already gone to shit, just like everything else nowadays. But it seems like you weren't alone. You seemed to notice somebody standing at the fountain, just letting themselves get soaked by the rain, judging by how wet his jacket was. You had a feeling you've seen this man before, despite not being able to see his face. You felt awfully attracted to him, not in the way of sexual or romantic interest, just like you had to go up to him and see who he was.

So, you did.

It only took a few steps for him to notice you, the man turning around to face you, his face alike to a sopping wet cat that was forced to be bathed by his master. As he revealed himself, you noticed it was Samurai. You two used to be something, you still don't know what, but it was something. Like some cursed situationship that had broken you down and rebuilt you more times than you thought was humanly possible; and after weeks of no contact, you finally got to see him again. You weren't sure what to think.

He seemed to notice you as well, his eyebrows shooting up and his expression turning into one you weren't quite sure you've seen before. You two stood like that for a while, just stupidly staring at each other like strangers.

You stood in the quiet night with him for a while, the silence almost deafening if you didn't count the loud tapping of raindrops on the umbrella you still held in your hand.

You then decided to let go of my umbrella, letting it fall onto the floor as you walked towards him, eventually reaching him and gently cupping his awfully cold cheeks. For the first time, you seemed to feel more alive than him, his expression now mirroring your usual jaded stare.

You didn't say anything, eventually leaning in and gently pressing your chapped lips onto his. The contact was brief, but it said enough. You still loved him despite the lack of communication.

You could almost hear his brain shutting down as you placed your lips against his own. His body language and demeanor changing in mere seconds, his tense shoulders going slack and his stiff back hunching. It was like you flipped a switch inside of him. He opened his mouth to speak, but the only thing that came out was a shaky inhale. He then closed his slightly opened mouth and instead wrapped his arms around your waist.

You felt like you snapped him out of some sort of stupor.

Your hand stayed on his cheek, your warm skin a stark contrast to his almost icy skin. It felt oddly intimate, despite the time and place. But the intimacy didn't matter to you anymore, nor did your public image. If there was any place you'd want to be at any given moment, it'd be Samurai's arms, and now you are you don't care about anybody seeing.

You stared down at his chest for a while before moving your gaze back up to his face, your dull eyes staring deep into his, as if reading his thoughts. You took notice of the fact his eyes didn't look the same way they did the last time you saw him, like the spark inside of him had faded. You know how it feels.

“You're cold.” You started, your gruff voice breaking the comfortable silence you two had built up “Let's go back home.”

He seemed to sober up a little at that, as if he just now noticed you two were still standing outside in the pouring rain, that you two were almost soaked to the bone with his jacket not being of any help with that. He then nodded silently, as if he didn't trust himself to speak.

You gave him a small nod in acknowledgement back, as if accepting his answer, before extracting your hands from his face, trailing them down his wet sleeves before one of them gripped his hand. You know it's probably childish to hold hands at your big age, but the overwhelming need to touch him in any way possible is stronger than yourself.

He seemed to accept your touch, giving your hand a very slight squeeze as if to remind himself he was actually touching you and that this wasn't just some drunken dream he managed to get.

“My apartment is max a five-minute walk away from here, but I suppose you already knew that."

You said to him, your tone unwavering despite the intense emotions you felt. He remained awfully quiet though, only responding with a small ‘lead the way'. You couldn't help but feel upset by it, but you can't blame him. With how the world is right now, he has all the right to feel like shit. At least he won't feel like shit alone now.

You two started walking not too long after that, leaving your long-forgotten umbrella behind. There are worse things going on in this world than littering, hell you can bet that thing will be destroyed in less than three days by the devils around anyway. It doesn't matter. Nothing does anymore.

Notes:

ts so corny but I had to write it anyway
