Work Text:
The sounds of pounding feet and excited giggles were the only, brief warning Tim got before he was caught on the painful side of two flying tackles.
“Dad!”
“Wake up! Wake up! There's no school! They cancelled it!”
“There's so much snow!!” Clara bounded across the mattress, and then took a flying leap, once again landing right on top of her father.
“Can we go play in it?! Can we? Please?! Dad, dad, dad, please?!” Just as Tim sat up and grabbed his daughter, Elliot barrel rolled off the bed and ran over to the window, ripping the blinds open to show a blanket of fluffy white snow covering everything.
“I wanna make a snowman!”
“I wanna have a snowball fight!”
“I want to sleep for ten more minutes.” Tim yawned and scooped Elliot up with his free arm on his way out of the bedroom.
Out in the kitchen, Conner was already brewing coffee and ladling pancake batter into a pan.
“Morning, hon. Kids, I told you to go see if he was awake, not to wake him up.”
Tim set first Elliot, and then Clara down in their seats at the dining table, yawning again widely and making his way over to the coffee pot.
“Clara jumped on him!”
“Elliot was the one yelling!”
“You were yelling, too!”
“Was not!”
“Yeah, you were!”
“No, I wasn't!”
“Both of you-,” Tim poured his coffee, not even turning around until after he had had that first sip, giving them both time to sit and stop fighting. “- who wants to tell me why you're yelling and not getting ready for school?”
“There's no school!”
“It's cancelled! Papa got the call while we were getting dressed!”
“We get a snow day!”
“Can we go play in the snow?!”
“Yeah, can we?!”
“Clara, Elliot.” Conner used a spatula to scoop the pancakes out of the pan and onto a serving plate. “Take it down a notch. We need breakfast before we go outside.”
“I'll get the syrup!” Clara jumped out of her chair and ran to the fridge.
“I'll get the orange juice!” Elliot followed her.
“And I'm going to get ready for the day.” Tim set his empty mug in the sink and went back to the bedroom.
The twins were devouring their pancakes and fruit by the time Tim returned to the kitchen. He kissed them each on top of their heads on his way to his own seat, and then kissed his husband on the cheek before taking a bite of his breakfast.
“Can we play outside after we're done?” Clara couldn't take her eyes off the glass balcony door, through which they had a fantastic view of the falling snow.
“Hmmmmmm.” Tim pretended to think hard about his answer. “You said school was cancelled today?” He raised an eyebrow at Conner.
Conner nodded. “That's right. There's too much snow on the roads for the busses to make it around the city, and even more is forecasted to come later today.”
Elliot and Clara watched them excitedly, eyes lighting up and smiles widening.
And then immediately falling when their Papa kept talking.
“Buuut since they're still so young, missing an entire day of first grade might not be a good idea. I mean, what if they were supposed to learn something reeeally important today?”
Tim nodded solemnly, taking a sip of his second coffee. “That's right. Maybe I should go call your Uncle Jason. I'm sure he's got some reading homework he can assign.”
“What?!!”
“Nooooo!”
“That way you two can stay inside where it's all warm and cozy-”
“Nonononononono-,”
“Please, Dad, please, the snow!!”
“-we can spend the day reading, maybe writing an essay about your books so you can show your Uncle that you really understood all the nuances in the stories he assigns-”
“PLEEEEEESASE!”
“PAPA!”
“I don't think they like your ideas.” Conner nonchalantly.
“Nonsense. Those are screams of joy.” Tim hid his smile by taking another drink of coffee.
“It! Just! Snowed!”
“And you want us to STAY INSIDE??! And READ?!”
“I dunno, babe.” Conner speared a strawberry with his fork. “It doesn't sound like they're really sure what they want to do with their day off. Maybe we should keep them inside. Ooh! We can work on a puzzle together. That sounds like fun, doesn't it?”
“NOOOO!” They both screamed in horror, causing their dads to laugh.
“Okay, okay.” Conner held up a hand until they calmed down.
Once they had and were silent, Tim took over.
“Papa and I need a little time to finish eating, alright? So how about the two of you brush your teeth, make your beds…. and get ready to go out and play.”
Their eyes lit up immediately.
“Really!?” Elliot threw his arms up to cheer, but Clara was already tearing out of the room as fast as she could. “Hey! Wait for me!” He shouted, running after her.
Conner watched them leave and bit into his strawberry. “They're going to be a handful when their Kryptonian abilities start showing up.”
“Shhhh.” Tim glared lightly at him over the rim of his coffee mug. He wasn't ready to think about that. He wasn't ready to think about them growing up.
“Elliot, gimme my toothbrush! Eli- Dad!! He's hogging the sink!”
They still had a few more years to prepare for that.
