Chapter: 1
The lake of peace that was Odysseus’s mind began to stir that night. 13 year old Odysseus fidgeted, picking and bitting at the skin of his thumb. Selene, radiant and towering, watched him with amusement. Her eyes were a full shimmering grey, and glowed in the dim lighting of the night.
"Speak your mind, my little star," she said, her voice a soft echo through the dark expanse of the night. "You’ve been all ruffled since we got up here. Is it that you miss your father?" The last bit had been but a whisper, as if speaking about the boy’s dad would break his heart. “No I just-“ he’s cut off with another guess from the titaness “Is it something I did or say?” She sates worry clear in her voice.
“No! It’s nothing about you or anything like that!” He says quickly trying to keep the haste out his voice but ultimately failing. A blush begins to dust his cheeks. "It's just that” he pauses for a moment hesitant to actually speak his mind, “There are these two mortals back on Earth…. I’ve only visited them a few times but there’s just…something about them" the words came out weaker and more nervous then he wanted them to but he weirdly enough couldn’t quite help it. He fiddled with a few of his back feathers twisting and turning them knowing that his father would ask about the later. “-Like I simply just want to be around them, I don’t really know how to explain it.”
Selene hummed in understanding, a sound like the gentle ring of a wind chime. She plucked Odysseus from the spot on the floor he was beginning to shrink on, instead settling him comfortably on her lap.
"Ah, mortals," she sighed, sounding as if she was exhausted already. "They are such terrible beings though we are drawn to them nonetheless, there one minute yet gone the next. Don't let your heart get too tangled with them, little one. We immortals burn for eons. It is a path that will only lead to dispear" Odysseus frowned, his brow furrowed. "I understand but the care I feel for them will not just disappear in an instant" Selene's face softened, turning from a half scowl to a sad smile. She knew that ache, that yearning for compassion and love. But she also knew the inevitable heartbreak that came with loving mortal, who lived such small fleeting lives. "I know little star, but remember who you are. You are the North Star, constant and true, a guide mortals seek in the night. Mortals will come and leave, but you will always stay and shine.”
