Summary
The first time, Odysseus was fairly young.
Below ten years of age, and the man had been very nice, giving him a piece of itria, the sesame brittle crunching deliciously crisp and sweet between his teeth, and promising lots more in his ship.
The cage had been padded at the bottom, and smelled of lamb, which Odysseus had liked; and it was the safest part of the ship when the storms came, sturdy and tied down to the mast, so while everyone and everything else was thrown about, Odysseus could nap at the bottom, safe from the winds and roiling waves.
All those who live have a destiny, woven into the tapestry of the Fates.
Odysseus finds out that his destiny is really really shitty and annoying.
Luckily, Odysseus knows how to make the best of anything that happens.
Step 1: learn to lie really really well.

Summary
Eleven years after the Fall of Troy, Diomedes of Argos, exiled from his kingdom due to hearsay and with nothing to his name, washes up on the shores of Ithaca.
Odysseus, returned home to Ithaca only a year before from ten years adrift on the open seas, is still struggling somewhat to settle back into his life on land, even with no angry gods going after him or curses or prophecies hanging over his head.
When another prophecy comes to Odysseus' door, he reluctantly prepares to leave home again, but he's not facing the perils of Poseidon's sea by himself this time. Diomedes is coming with him, whether Odysseus wants it or not. And Diomedes, for his part, has one goal: keep them both alive and return to Ithaca safely, or die trying.
