The stoplight system worked as such: L would do whatever he wanted, and if Light wanted to stop, he would say red, any time. If he wanted to slow down, he would say yellow. Practically, it would be kind of ridiculous to say ‘blue’ instead of ‘yes’ or ‘keep going’, if Light wanted to say that, but, L explained, sometimes he just wanted to check in with Light. To be safe. If L asked for a color and he didn’t get blue, he would assume Light wanted to say red.
That last little caveat was the worst part of the game, by the way. Light did not enjoy having to call blue at all.
