Bittersweet Support

Summary:

Deku is panicking because he forgot Todoroki's birthday was coming up, and Bakugou "helps" lighten the mood.

Notes:

I saw a prompt on Tumblr and it inspired me to make a spin-off of it. I've been dying to write some KatsuDeku as well lately and am so glad I was finally able to!

The baking aspect of Bakugou came from @milkcandie, who has an amazing KatsuDeku fic in a patisserie AU! I highly recommend checking it out as well.

If you have any advice/comments/suggestions, don't hesitate to let me know in the comments!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It was nearing sunset. Izuku was pacing around the living room of his house, nervously running his hands through his green tinted hair. He was mumbling to himself, trying desperately to come to some sort of conclusion. Much to his dismay, however, he continued to end up in perpetual loops of failing scenarios.

Suddenly, there were three, loud knocks on the front door. Izuku hurriedly ran over and opened it, revealing a somewhat-ticked off Katsuki. He was holding his cellphone in one hand and a plastic bag of miscellaneous items in the other. Issue flashed him an awkward smile, stepping out of the way to let him inside.

"What's the huge fucking deal?" Katsuki asks as he walks inside, glancing down at his cellphone. "All you text me is some anxiety-ridden plea for help, and you don't even tell me what's going on." His tone is low and irritated, but he softens slightly when he notices just how upset Izuku seems to be.

"O-Oh, yeah, sorry about that," Izuku starts, closing the door behind the two as Katsuki slips his shoes off. "It's, uh...I'm just kind of worried about something..."

Katsuki raises an eyebrow at this, walking over to the kitchen and setting his bag on the counter. "Geez, spit it out already. What is it?"

Izuku blushes faintly, now worrying about how Katsuki will react to the source of his struggle. With a sigh, he gives in. "I-I just... I forgot that tomorrow is Todoroki-kun's birthday. I have nothing to give him, and there's not enough time to go get anything! What am I going to do?!"

Katsuki lets out a frustrated noise, turning away from the slightly shorter boy. "Is that seriously all this is about?" he asked, clearly annoyed.

"Well, yes, but it's a big deal, Kacchan!" he attempted to explain. "I was worried if I told you earlier you wouldn't come, mainly because I need your advice but also because you're just really good at cheering me up, even when you're annoyed with me, which is pretty often but still-" Izuku began, rambling mindlessly.

Instead of cutting off Izuku, Katsuki began to empty the bag of it's possessions. Inside, there had been a day-old cupcake, some assorted frosting tubes, a jar of All Might-themed sprinkles--they were the cheapest at the store--and a canister of whipped cream. He didn't need to worry about Izuku catching sight of his work either, as the boy had plenty of other concerns taking up his focus.

After a minute or so of Izuku's first speech, Katsuki finally cut in. "Why can't you just tell the half-and-half bastard that you forgot and will get him something later?"

Izuku plopped down exasperatedly on his couch, still visible to Katsuki. He had worked himself up enough to be sweating lightly. "I can't do that, Kacchan, it's still impolite! Todoroki-kun means a lot to me, I don't want him thinking I don't care enough to not remember his birthday!" Katsuki frowned upon hearing Izuku say how much he cared for the other, angrily twisting a frosting cap onto one of the tubes.

"Well you did forget," he reminded Izuku. "Just accept that and find some other fucking way to be nice to him." He began decorating the cupcake, however still listening to Izuku.

The younger boy stood up again and immediately began another rant, trying frantically to explain a point that was going nowhere. Katsuki decided it would be easier at this point to just let him wear out his words rather than add more fuel to the fire. He continued to focus on the mini-culinary project in front of him, his hands surprisingly at ease and skilled with the process.

Izuku's tirade lasted over eight solid minutes, and in the end had only proven to work the teenager up even more. Katsuki was stumbling over the extent of his limits with Izuku, and at that point decided to take action on the matter. Abandoning his now complete cupcake, he strode over to Izuku with a hand behind his back.

"-and I still don't get how nothing has changed this whole time, and I'm never sure how I should-" Izuku faltered as Katsuki approached him. "K-Kacchan? What are you doing?" he asked nervously.

Katsuki's expression was monotone, but his eyes glinted with mischievous intentions. Izuku tensed up, the sheer ambiguity of what was to come next being overwhelmingly palpable.

In one swift motion, Katsuki pulled the canister of whipped cream out from behind his back and held it in front of Izuku's face. For that brief, unshakeable moment, Izuku's bright green eyes met with Katsuki's narrow ones.

And then Katsuki pushed down on the nozzle, spraying a multitude of fluffy cream into Izuku's face.

"GAH! K-Kacchan!" Izuku stammered, his balance wavering. A huge, satisfied grin stretched out across Katsuki's face.

Izuku began laughing shortly after, trying to lick the whipped cream off his face. "What the heck, Kacchan! Don't scare me like that!"

The blond shrugged. "Can't make any promises."

After a short period of struggling amongst the sticky, desired substance, Izuku finally managed to get the last of the cream off. He looked back up at Katsuki, finally smiling after what seemed like ages to the older teen.

"Why do you even have whipped cream with you?" he questioned, having remained oblivious to Katsuki behind the kitchen counter. Walking back to the finalized cupcake, the taller boy took his creation and presented it to Izuku, blushing slightly.

"Here. Take it," he stated firmly, his tone a mixture of commanding and compassion. Izuku's face lit up when he saw the dessert, making an adorable noise of delight.

The cupcake was made from a standard chocolate mix. It's top carefully held stripes of red, white, and blue frosting and was adorned with the matching All Might sprinkles. It was nothing particularly impressive, other than the careful alignment of the frosting and well-timed baking; to Izuku, however, it was absolutely incredible.

"Kacchan, did you make this?!" he gasped, eagerly taking it in his hands. The boy's reaction was nothing less than precious to Katsuki, and he blushed harder.

"It's not a big deal, I was just bored yesterday and found some mix in the pantry," he huffed, crossing his arms. Izuku continued to beam up at him.

He was just about to take a bite of it when he had a humorous idea. He stopped, looking back at Katsuki. "Kacchan! I could give this to Todoroki-kun as his present!"

Katsuki nearly erupted into flames, glaring at Izuku with barely-controlled rage. "What?! Don't you dare give that damn fuckmunch my cupcake, you shitnerd!" he yelled. Izuku began to giggle again, taking one of Katsuki's hands and intertwining his sticky fingers with the other's. The blond stopped and stared back at Izuku, receiving a heart-melting smile. He frowned sedately and let out an irritated sigh, returning the grasp as Izuku took a bite of the savory treat.

The next morning when Izuku arrives at Yuuei, he finds a box sitting atop his desk with a note attached. The words inside were written hastily, reading "Give this to that dumbass cold-shoulder".

He smiles, seeing a decorated cupcake inside.

Notes:

Bakugou tries. He really does.
Thank god Deku is such a sweetie.
