Summary
They marry on a gloomy afternoon in December, just two days before Christmas. Missus Rogers would have never allowed it had she been around, God rest her soul in peace. There had been no announcement in the papers, no whispers in the stairwell in the weeks leading up to their nuptials.
Times were tough, but gossip lifted spirits high. Folks weren’t too terribly consumed with their own troubles to know a shotgun wedding when they saw one, and a scandal of the Barnes variety always kept the neighborhood sufficiently fed when the soup lines wound a little too long around the block. He has been looking a bit brawny about the belly as of late, hasn’t he?
How scandalous!
First comes love, indeed. After that? Order of events interchangeable.
