Work Text:
Even as a young girl, Momo was aware of what society told her a girl was supposed to do - dress nice, stay quiet, be polite, and most importantly, no rough housing or getting muddy.
Momo was very grateful that Granny had essentially told her to ignore all that silly stuff other adults tried to instill upon her, and to do whatever made her happy.
So, Momo loved to get dirty. She loves to roughhouse with the boys, loved watching films that weren't 'appropriate for young girls', and most importantly…
She loved going to the paddy fields with her best friend to hunt frogs. It was a tradition, any time after there had been rainfall, Ken would show up at her door like clockwork. He'd wear his green froggy raincoat with matching umbrella and boots, which always brought a smile to Momo's face. Yes, she didn't like to act 'lady-like', but she did love cute things — but so did Ken!
Her own raincoat was pink, a brand new one due to having ripped the last one tripping in the rice fields. Granny had simply rolled her eyes when she'd come home crying about it and said not to worry - sure enough, she had a new one on her bed the next day when she got home from school. It was a little thicker than the last one, keeping her feeling much warmer when the rain made the air just a bit too cool.
Today was just like every other rainy day - it had rained a lot overnight, and though it was still raining, it had softened to a gentle shower. Perfect for frog hunting! She prepared for her usual outing before Ken could even show up - comfy clothes for running in that it wouldn't matter if they got muddy, her pretty new raincoat, and her classic yellow boots. She didn't mind that the yellow clashed with the pink, because the yellow looked very pretty next to Ken's green ones!
Sitting in front of the door, she hummed to herself as she waited for her best friend to show up. Like clockwork, there was a knock on the door less than ten minutes later - but it felt like it took forever. Jumping to her feet, she ripped the door open with a grin, her best friend standing there with his fist still raised to knock again.
"Momo!" he grinned, a light pink tinting his face - Ken blushed a lot, and Momo loved it a lot. "Are you ready to go?"
Momo loved that he didn't even need to say what they were going to do - she loved tradition, and this was one that was very special to her.
"Granny! We're going to the rice fields!" she called out behind her, not even waiting for a response before grabbing Ken's hand and running out the door. They giggled as their boots splashed in the puddles, running hand in hand toward the rice fields.
They had a lot of frog hunting to do.
"It's been raining a lot lately," Momo pointed out from where she was sitting on the couch, feet in her husband's lap as she read. They'd been enjoying a quiet day, both of them having the day off from work and loving to spend those days just in each other's company.
"Hm?" Okarun said, tilting his head a bit. "Yeah, I guess it has been — it is the rainy season."
"Do you… want to do something fun?" Momo asked with a smirk, closing her book, already knowing that her husband would go along with whatever she requested.
"I feel like I should be a bit nervous," he teased, shoving her legs off of his lap. "But, I suppose."
Momo shoved his shoulder as she sat up, getting to her feet with a stretch.
"Go put on your raincoat," she said, rolling her neck to loosen up.
"We're going out?" Okarun asked, but stood up as requested and moved toward the closet.
"It'll be fun!" Momo grinned back. "C'mon, it's been ages since we've gone to the rice fields."
Okarun's eyes widened in realization, grin spreading over his face in such pure joy that Momo practically melted.
They'd gone frog hunting less and less as they got older — not because they didn't want to, but because they just didn't have time. School work increased, free time spent studying more than playing. Then there was work, and other commitments. They still tried to go on occasion, but at this point, Momo couldn't remember the last time they'd gone.
Getting ready in a companionable silence, Momo couldn't help but smile… That is, until she almost tripped as she pulled on her boots, falling into her husband's shoulder who simply laughed as he helped to right her.
It was days like today that she truly felt so deeply in sync with the love of her life. They didn't need words, the silence comforting rather than uncomfortable. Words weren't even needed, able to read the other based off their actions and expressions.
She held her hand out as she opened the front door, Okarun grinning as he reached out to grab it. It fit into hers just as perfectly as it did when they were kids.
And with that, they headed out to the paddy fields.
They had a lot of frog hunting to do.
