Campus Legend

Summary:

Secunit has a bit of a reputation at PSUMNT.

Prompt: Omnipotence

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Technically speaking, the students know Secunit is not omnipotent. Realistically, it feels like it might as well be.

“I'm warning you now,” the upperclassmen say, when their younger counterparts are packing for the Perihelion rotation. “That whatever you think you can get away with, you can't.”

Illicit intoxicants will be confiscated upon crossing the airlock threshold. Unapproved field samples smuggled in by away teams will be firmly stopped at the door. Strangely, pirated media transmissions tend to be left alone, but Secunit will know about everything and anything else, even when there seems to be no way for it to find out.

“That's not always a bad thing, though,” the RAs point out to quavering freshmen. “It always seems to know when you're in trouble, too.”

Half of the current stellar cartography cohort seems to have a story of near-death or destruction that involves being scooped up by the scruff by Secunit, just in the nick of time. It's carried students home to keep them from walking on broken ankles, has shooed away large and hostile fauna, has glared away potential spaceport pickpockets…It manages to always be in the right place at the time to make sure everyone goes home with their wallets and the same number of limbs they left with.

“Listen, I know it looks annoyed with the universe, but it's really very sweet,” the older students with repeat expeditions under their belts insist.

Secunit has very strong views on making sure humans get proper sleep and eat the correct number of meals per day. It’s a warm, steady presence to sit next to when half-semester homesickness hits. It gives good, if blunt and slightly awkward, advice. It is…kind. This, more than anything else, is what makes it a celebrated fixture of campus life at PSUMNT. This, more than anything else, is why its apparent omnipotence is not terrifying.
