Alex sighed, slamming his laptop shut, as he blearily rubbed his eyes. Jefferson had been mercilessly taunting him all day, mocking typos and grammatical errors in the article he had typed up at four am that same morning. While Washington, his boss, had been nothing but understanding, Jefferson had been rubbing every mistake in his face while bearing a smile that made Alexander want to punch his stupid teeth into the back of his skull.
“Fuck you, Jefferson.” He muttered to seemingly no one in particular. Maybe Phillip, John’s pet turtle.
John. God, Hamilton missed him. It had been weeks since he went to visit his fostered siblings in South Carolina. Hamilton’s stupid, golden retriever boyfriend redefined bravery- returning to the same place that tore his life apart when he was a teenager. He had been gone for so long- probably sick of Hamilton. At least, that’s what Alexander’s mind sickly whispered to him. ‘Laf went to the airport to catch a flight to South Carolina to run away with John. They’re a perfect pair. No need for you.” A voice that sounded irritatingly like Jefferson’s taunted in his mind.
As Alexander drowned in his own thoughts, the world buzzed around him. Vision blurring at the edges, sounds fading to a distant hum. ‘Shit. Not now. Not when Laf is bringing John back from the airport.’ Hamilton thought despairingly. He hadn’t zoned out like this in months, the thoughts in the back of his mind hadn’t grown so much. His lovers were always there to comfort him, to hold him, to glue the broken pieces back together. Now, Alexander desperately clawed at the brink of fainting from overstimulation. The buzzing of his decades old laptop, the ticking of the ancient grandfather clock that Lafayette insisted on buying at a market three years earlier, his own breathing- it was all to much, tears streamed down Alex’s face as he silently fought a battle against his own screaming thoughts…
Lafayette slammed the door behind John, practically vibrating with the excitement of his lover being home. “Alex! Mon amour, we are- Alexander?”
The sound of a bag being dropped echoed around the room. As Lafayette turned the corner into the living room of their apartment, he froze, eyes widening at the scene before him.
John was gently shaking Alex’s limp hand, whispering meaningless words as he tried to pull the man he loved back into the real world. Hamilton sat slumped, eyes unfocused and cloudy with dewy tears, staring at the wall before him.
“Alexander! My love, my darling.” Lafayette rushed to Alex’s side, hands around his waist in less than a second. “Mon amour, speak to me. Hello? Alex? Please, darling.”
Lafayette choked on a sob that he knew Hamilton was well beyond hearing. “Hammie? Alex?” John murmured softly. “I know you’re not with us, love, but we need you back. Can you do that, dearest?” John traced circles into the palms of Alexander’s hands, muttering words of encouragement and comfort as Alex slowly blinked.
“Amazing. So good, my darling. Wonderful. Can you tell me five things you can see?” Hamilton blinked furiously, eyebrows furrowing together. “I…uh… the couch… you… laf… the wall, and, um…” Hamilton closes his eyes in concentration. “The-the floor.”
“So good, Alexander. So perfect.” John breathed, brushing a strand of raven hair out of his boyfriend’s eyes. He continued grounding Alex, all the through his senses, until Alex was shifting in his seat, returned to the world.
“We can talk about this later. Sleep, Mon amours. You two have had exhausting days.” Lafayette finally spoke out, though his voice trembled as he spoke.
John’s arms snaked around Alex’s waist, as Lafayette’s hands slowly sneaked into the smallest man’s jet black hair, gently braiding the silky strands as the trio slipped into slumber.
