   Safe. He looked past her at the corpse; the wings were still twitching slightly, black feathers curling into ash. The smell of them—burning—made his stomach turn. He took a step back. His heel slid. The wall caught him again.
   “You—” He gestured at the body, at her hands. He couldn’t finish.

   “It’s all right,” she repeated, and this time she smiled.

   He wanted to go home. He wanted to tell her that, though he wasn’t sure what direction home was anymore.
