Work Text:

It was a normal, chilly fall evening in Smiling Valley.

Or at least it started out that way.

Catnap was walking home from Crafty’s house after helping her fall asleep, because she had too many creative ideas, but needed to rest or she’d exhaust herself.

He loved walking at night, the cool breeze, the sounds of crickets and toads, and the glittering stars up above were all wonderful things.

Suddenly, he hears a rustle in the bushes.

He looks over, curious, then shrugs.
‘Probably just a squirrel.’
He thinks.

But then, the bush rustles again.

Catnap ignores it, and tries to continue walking, but he couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched…

Suddenly, someone who Catnap couldn’t see jumps out and grabs him from behind, covering his mouth and eyes.

He yelps, trying to get them off of him, but his muffled cries are drowned out.

Then, Catnap feels light pressure on his neck, causing him to pass out.

~~~
When Catnap woke up, he was…
In Dogday’s room…?
“H-how’d I get here…?”
He asks himself.
He looked down, seeing he was sitting on Dogday’s beanbag chair, with his wrists and ankles tied together.
“W-why am I-“
Then, the door opens.
And in walks Dogday.
Catnap gasp.
“D-dogday?!”
He says aloud. “Did… did you do this?!”
Dogday nodded.
Catnap gets angry.
“W-why did you KIDNAP me?!”
Dogday steps closer.
“I need to tell you something.”
He says bluntly.
Catnap raises an eyebrow.
“Uh… okay…?”
He whispers. “What is it? And… could you not have abducted me to tell me…?”
Dogday takes a deep breath.
“Catnap… when I tell you this… i’m fully prepared for any vocal beration afterwards.”
He says. “So… feel free to do your worst…”
Catnap was even more confusing.
“W-what on earth are you saying?!”
He says, louder. “Why would I vocally berate you?!”
Dogday squeezes his eyes shut.
“BECAUSE I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU!”
He blurts out.
Catnap was stunned, his face slightly pink,
Dogday whimpers a bit, opening his eyes.
“I-I know that’s weird, but just… Can I confess…?”
Catnap slowly nods.
“B-by all means…”
Dogday slowly steps closer.
“Catnap… ever since we met, I felt… safe around you.”
He starts.
“Everything, from your beautiful lilac fur, to your enchanting lavender scent, to the way you always hold my hand when you see that i’m scared, it… it always makes my heart go faster than Kickin trying his hardest to beat Hoppy in a race even though he always loses…”
With every word Dogday says, Catnap’s expression softens.
“And I know that you probably don’t feel the same, but I had to tell you!”
Dogday says, nearly crying.
He wipes his eyes.
“I love you, Catnap… no matter how hard I try not to…”
Then, the room was silent.
The tension in the air was thicker than when you put whipping cream and sugar in the blender to make whipped cream but leave it in there too long and then it’s impossible to clean up.
“Come closer.”
Catnap finally says, quietly.
Dogday nods, walking over to the beanbag chair.
“Kneel down, look me in the eye.”
Dogday does so.
“Close your eyes.”
Shakily, Dogday closes his eyes, whimpering a bit.
He was terrified of what Catnap might do.
Was he gonna yell? Was he gonna escape somehow? What would happen?
He was more scared than me when I saw spiders bigger than a tractor tire in my nightmares.
Suddenly, Dogday feels warmth pressed against his mouth.
His eyes shoot open and he lets out a “MRRRP?!”
Catnap was kissing him.
Dogday’s mind was doing flips in his head.
Why was he kissing him?! Was it a trick? A diversion? Why were his lips even softer than he’d dreamed?
Then, Catnap slowly pulls back, looking deeply into his eyes.
“I love you too, world's biggest idiot.”
After a moment or two of shock, a bright smile makes its way across Dogday’s face, tears of joy running down his cheeks.
“R-really…?”
Catnap nods.
“More than I love sleeping.”
He says with a sweet smile.
Dogday finally undoes the ropes on Catnap’s wrists and ankles, so the cat can hug him.
The two embrace, happy that their feelings were shared.
Dogday was happier than he’d been in a while… and that was saying something.
“Dogday…”
Catnap says, kissing his cheek. “I know you wanted to confess, but…”
He pulls back, looking him in the eye.
“But… why did you have to KIDNAP me…?”
He says quietly.
Dogday nuzzles his shoulder.
“I was scared of you leaving after you rejected me…”
He says.
“I thought that if you couldn’t leave, we could at least talk through it and have some kind of closure… rather than you never speaking to me again…”
He sniffles. “My heart couldn’t handle you hating me forever…”
Catnap’s expression softens.
“Aww, Dogday…” he says, holding him closer. “I wouldn’t do that to you…”
He kisses his head. “Even if I didn’t feel the same, I wouldn’t just run out on you like that…”
Dogda whimpers.
“R-really…?”
Catnap purrs softly.
“Of course not…”
He says. “I love you.”
Dogday hugs Catnap tighter.
“I love you too…”
Dogday then pulls back to gently kiss him on the lips again.
Catnap returns it, wrapping his arms around his lover happily.
“So, can we cuddle in bed?”
Catnap asks. “Not that the beanbag chair isn’t great, but I'm getting sleepy.”
Dogday giggles, leaning down and lifting Catnap up bridal style, gently depositing him onto the soft orange duvet.
He pulls up the covers for him, crawling under as Catnap does as well, clinging to him like a cute kitty magnet.
Once they were settled, Dogday held his moonlight close, listening to the soothing sounds of purring.
“Hey sunshine?”
Catnap says quietly.
“Hmm?”
Dogday answers, opening one eye.
Catnap gently strokes the side of his cheek.
“The next time you have something important to tell me, just ask.”
Dogday giggles, giving Catnap a kiss between the eyes.
“Will do.”
