“Honey, are you up?” your mom’s voice echoed down the hall. The cold tiles of the bathroom floor pressed against your face.
The sound of your footsteps entering the kitchen was quickly noticed. “You need to leave right now, young lady. A few more absent days and you’re grounded.” she rambled, frustrated, as she whisked pancake batter in a silver bowl. “I’m going! I’m going…” you groaned, grabbing your backpack and tying your shoes. After slipping out the door, you contemplated any way to skip school. Hang out in the woods? Sleep on a bench at the mall? A dozen failed ideas ran through your head. Eventually, you accepted defeat, hopping onto your bike that rested in the grass.
Whispers suffocated you as you walked through the hallways. You couldn’t even bring yourself to eat lunch. You felt lost and exhausted. The day was going exactly how you knew it would. You leaned against the wall in the lunchroom. At this point, you were too tired to care about what anyone thought. You closed your eyes for a moment, trying to stop thinking, to stop worrying. “What’s wrong with her?” Steve mumbled, his fingers softly tapping the wooden table. “Oh, L/n? Dude, I don’t know. I think her and Jason broke up.” Tommy said, crunching obnoxiously on his bag of chips. “She was dating Jason?” Steve looked across at his friend. Tommy’s eyebrows furrowed as he dug his hand back into the bag. “Uh, yeah. Where have you been?” “Oh. My bad.” Steve scoffed sarcastically. “I don’t like him. I don't know, he just gives me bad vibes.” He glanced back at you as he spoke. “Well, Steve, you don’t gotta worry about him anymore. Him and his family just moved away.” Steve continued staring at you. He’d never talked to you before. He felt bad, you looked miserable. He wasn’t sure why he felt that way. “Why did they leave?” Tommy shrugged.
