Work Text:

It had been weeks now. Constantly running, changing cars and dressing up differently each day just so the government wouldn’t recognise you from the surveillance footage. Natasha was masterful in cloaking herself from everyone around her, she knew how to pass as anyone else but herself.

You weren’t known to the public, her partner she had kept as a secret from everyone until now this whole time. But still, just in case, you trailed along with changing appearance with her. At first it had been fun, in a sense, but it quickly grew to be exhausting.

You didn’t know when the chase would calm down or end completely. Right now Nat was wanted for treason, only for siding with Steve in the end — she understood why Tony was angry with her, but she still felt it had been the right thing to do. And you, of course, agreed with her stance about it. Tony was mainly driven by rage, not fully grasping that Bucky wasn’t in control when he killed Tony’s parents, but he had chosen to not listen and kill Bucky for his crimes. It was madness, and it wasn’t the Tony you had grown to know along the years.

You had been going from safehouse to safehouse, as far away from Accords as you could. Hiding in Europe, briefly dipping in Asia, before returning to some small village at the border of Europe and Asia. And there you were right now too, in a cottage by the hills, safe from the rest of the world.

Nat poured coffee into her mug before making her way to the sofa where you were sitting with your book. You looked up, smiling at her briefly, and she sighed. “Weathercast promised another chilly day for today.”

“Of course,” you replied, shrugging. “Mountain air tends to be like that.”

She stared at the television flickering slightly, the sound crackling at times, and you could see she was annoyed at the reception. She had been on the run countless times during her life, but now she was on the run from the man who had saved her from trouble more than once, twice or even thrice. The news were crucial to follow, someone would always snitch if your general hiding area would be found, and soon news outlets would boom at civilians to stay vigilant.

Not that people in this village really followed the news that didn’t concern their own country, but you’d never know — especially if Tony had promised a reward for hints. You didn’t think he'd be that desperate, Nat thought so too. He just didn’t want to see Bucky or Steve ever again, everything else would be beyond his energy. That is, if he still was half the man you knew before you saw him attempting to execute Bucky out of rage.

Nat closed her eyes for a moment and you scooted closer to her. “He’ll come to his senses eventually.”

She opened her eyes, looking at you. “I sure hope so.”
