Ending up lying on the ground while surrounded by debris was not how you hoped your day would go when you woke up at the morning.
You thought you were well enough prepared, you thought you could fight just as well as the rest of them — but instead there you were, gasping for air, helplessly looking as a soldier raised his gun towards you.
But then — a flash of the sun as a shadow flickered in front of it, and before you knew it, you were enveloped in the shadow of something — someone.
“Sam?” you gasped, watching as his wings vibrated slightly as bullets rebounded off it.
“Move!” he shouted, nodding behind you and you started crawling for cover, before he whipped around and sent the soldier flying, before jumping after him. It took a few minutes, but he descended in front of you soon enough again, crouching beside you and looking at your side after he saw you pressed your hand against your ribs. “Let me see.”
You hesitated, but then carefully lifted your shirt up and hissed as the cold air hit the injury.
He inspected your skin for a moment before he huffed. “Yeah, that’s going to be one hell of a bruise.”
“That bad, huh?” you groaned. “Hurts like something is broken at least.”
He sighed. “You’re off duty for now. I’ll ask Wanda to create a force field around you, just… stay hidden until then.”
You took in a deep breath. “I won’t go anywhere, trust me.”
He offered you one more smile, before backing away and taking off, and you tried to lay as flat as you could — in the middle of a battle, the enemy had no time of checking shelters like this one, but you knew better than to take a risk.
A few moments later, you noticed a shadow approaching again, and opened your eyes to see Wanda smiling at you. “Sam told me you need some aid.”
“Yeah, I guess I will be stuck here for the rest of the battle,” you sighed. “But have fun for me too, kick those bastards back to wherever they came from.”
She grinned and nodded, before waving her hands and a dome slowly built around you, before she flew off again and you closed your eyes, listening to the battle raging around you. But at least you were safe, and would soon be up to fight for another day.
