Flock

Summary:

Flock: a number of birds of one kind feeding, resting, or traveling together. That was the dictionary's definition of the word. Yet it was nowhere near close to what a real flock was. They were a family of misfits, a mother hen, a hawk, and their ravens. Together they would soar through the sky knowing that they weren't alone.

Flock

Summary: Flock: a number of birds of one kind feeding, resting, or traveling together. That was the dictionary's definition of the word. Yet it was nowhere near close to what a real flock was. They were a family of misfits, a mother hen, a hawk, and their ravens. Together they would soar through the sky knowing that they weren't alone.

Pairing: Kagome/Hawks

Higurashi Kagome could only smile as she ran her fingers over soft black feathers. Whistling a light tune as her adopted son let out small content chirps. His head lay in her lap; his eyes closed as they basked in the warm sun. Her wavy black locks shifted as Dark Shadow buried himself deeper into her inky locks to avoid the sun's rays as well as bask in her warmth.

It was a calming atmosphere, one that made her heart swell with happiness. Hard to believe that nine years ago he was locked in a cage, a proverbial kept bird. His biological parents had meant well, but they were not equipped to handle not only their son but Dark Shadow as well. Dark Shadow, like his name implied, was a creature born of darkness and as such he stuck fear into those around him.

It was stupid really, Dark Shadow as well as Fumikage were honestly the sweetest children she had the pleasure of meeting. While the two shared a body, they were each their own individual person. Something their parents were unable to grasp fully, they feared Dark Shadow and took it out on Fumikage.

So, they had run away, six years old and living on the streets...yet it was still better than the home they had left behind. She had stumbled upon them on a routine patrol and had reached her hand out. Not at all flinching away as Dark Shadow tried to scare her away, she had merely laughed and called him cute.

"Did you get lost in your thoughts again?" Fumikage's voice pulled her from her memories, a light flush dusting her cheeks as Dark Shadow nuzzled her cheek before unwinding himself from her inky locks to settle on his host's shoulder.

Tucking a wayward strand of hair behind her ear, Kagome could only laugh and nod. "Yeah, just reminiscing is all." She paused and gave a large yawn, stretching her hands above her head. "Mm, it's getting late. We should start heading home. You have a big day ahead of you."

Fumikage nodded as he stood up, dusting off his black pants before reaching down to offer his adopted mother his hand. She took it without hesitation, her fingers intertwining with his as they began to walk through the park on their way home.

"I can't believe you start at U.A. tomorrow...jeez it feels like I just graduated myself!" She laughed as she swung their entwined hands lightly between them, a pep in her step. Excited for her sons as well as proud of them. "I wonder if Nezu is still teaching..." She mumbled to herself as she recalled her old home room teacher. Shoving her fond memories of her old teacher and classmates down she gave her sons a warm smile.

"I hope you have as much fun as I did...oh! Did you want to stop for oden before we head home?" Her voice was hopeful, it had been a while since they had stopped at their usual spot. Between juggling her job as a pro hero and helping her sons get ready for the entrance exam, they hadn't been able to go to the mom and pop run restaurant.

Fumikage could only share an amused look with Dark Shadow, they both knew Kagome was hoping they would say yes and even if they did say no, she would still find a way to drag them to the small restaurant. Oden was her favorite food just as much as it was theirs, in fact their love of it grew simply because of her.

"Sure, that sounds good." He chuckled as her eyes shined with happiness; it was so easy to make her happy. The simplest of things could bring a smile to her face, she always wore her emotions on her sleeve, unlike himself. He was often described as dark and moody, far too serious for a kid his age. It was a trait that had driven many people away, yet so long as he had Dark Shadow and his mother, he couldn't really be bothered to care.

She had reached a hand out to him and Dark Shadow, not a hint of fear in her deep blue eyes. A smile on her lips as she talked to them like they were people and not just monsters. He had taken hold of her hand and clung to it.

He would never let it go.

"Now, who's lost in their thoughts?" Her amused voice made a light flush dust his beak as Dark Shadow gave a light laugh at his embarrassment. Rolling his eyes, he shot her a small smile. "Yeah, yeah...what can I say I learned it from you." She snorted, her free hand once again moving her hair away from her face. Her earring shined in the light making his eyes zero in on it. It was a simple earring, a golden stud that had a black feather dangling from it.

It was one of his feathers, it was the first thing he had given her all those years ago. He didn't have much back then; everything was provided for him by her. She had taken up the role of his caretaker and mentor and over the course of their first year together had also become his mother.

She loved him when no one else had and she did it because she wanted to, not because she was obligated to. She encouraged not only him but Dark Shadow to be themselves, she had never once looked down at him for his bird-like tendencies. No, she found them cute and did her best to understand why he did certain things.

Like the feather, it had been his way of officially calming her as his family, it was a sign that even though there was no blood between them, she was his mother. She had sobbed when he explained it and merely hugged him and Dark Shadow, pressing kisses to their faces as she called them her sons.

The memory was one he as well as Dark Shadow held dear, so many of their earlier memories were of nothing but darkness and pain. They were easily overshadowed by the years spent in the light with their mother.
