Work Text:

Jax stared at the black triangle. His eyes shrunk, but he didn't move much beyond that. A green hand — Ribbit hand swiped his. “If you love me; join me,” Ribbit challenged. “Then help me. I want to join you, my love.”

Rainbows and colors were all around him. They were flying, swirling, mirroring symmetrical shapes. Pink and purple mingled around him. The old faces of friends flew by him. All of Ribbit was nowhere to be seen. “Ribbit where are you,” Jax asked. The peace flew by like the old faces. “Ribbit?” No voices replied. It was like Caine silenced a thousand words. None of them could hear him.

Maybe if he could wait years; he could wait still. Jax knew that was maybe a lie. For how much he missed his lover the world could wait, and it did. Nothing around him made noise or felt real. He was away from Caine's control. It's possible this was the best thing Caine did. If he did it at all it was a punishment for Jax's knowledge.

It's like he had a hundred eyes that watched for years. Now they report to Jax, giving him all the world's knowledge. Or was Caine just controlling him. He couldn't tell, but he couldn't resist the relaxation. It was as if he truly laid down.

Knock knock. Was it Ribbit? Jax couldn't wait to see his late girlfriend. He walked on the colors. His steps sounded like they walked across the floor. Out of muscle memory he found his door handle. He twisted it open.

“JAX!?” Their voice broke the absence of sound. He moved towards the sound of screaming and running. Their footsteps guided them. “Ribbit? Am I finally seeing you.” It came out all wrong and distorted. The person was nowhere to be heard. “Don't leave me again,” Jax tried to say. More people surrounded him. Voices circled him in judgement. They were all unlike Ribbit.

Jax hit the floor. Unknowingly he searched. Without the knowledge that he was too far gone to see what he has become. The monster inside of him is the monster he became. Jax was full of eyes he couldn't gaze upon.
