Chapter Text
Yellow clenched her hands around the wheels until her knuckles turned white. Window wipers swishing back and forth bravely against the onslaught of snow on the window. Not only was she driving out in the middle of nowhere on Christmas eve, there was a storm brewing, the roads were icy, and she also had to deal with Blue quietly sniffling next to her. Even though it was Blue’s idea to be out here in the first place.
Blue had this fantastic idea to go to Ocean Town.
Ocean Town.
Ocean Town of all places.
Apparently, she had found this cute holiday house that Pink would have loved. She had promptly bought the house and then proceeded to cry about Pink’s death. She somehow convinced them to go out there for Christmas and try a more traditional holiday, one that Pink would have begged for.
Blue also convinced them to go in the same car and wished to curse whoever came up with the idea in the first place. Whose idea was it to make road trips a family tradition? Whoever it was should get shot in the head, they obviously never had a family like hers. At the very least she had managed to convince the clods that she should drive.
So that was why she was out here in a forsaken storm instead of in her nice Empire City top floor penthouse, in her bed sipping wine with her stunning Yelena beneath her. But noooo, she was on the road with her cry-baby sister Blue next to her, her most infuriating sister White in the back next to the way to peppy Penelope, though Penelope was less in her seat and more in White’s. And lastly her beloved Yelena and meek Bella further back. Bags were cramped into the trunk and the music was firmly off. The only sound in the car was the quiet chatter of Yelena and Bella, Blue’s sobbing and the purring of the motor.
Said purring of the motor which suddenly began sputtering. At this Yellow held back several curses and she almost began praying. She would not get stranded, not on Christmas eve, not in this car, not on this road, and especially nowhere near Ocean Town. Sadly, it seemed that the car didn’t agree.
She actually cursed when the car broke down and she quickly pulled it off the road. Several expletives leaving her mouth, which got her a cross “Yellow!” from her most annoying sister. Leaning her forehead on the wheel, she ignored the shouts of concern from the others. Taking the moment for herself. And afterwards her hand went to the button to pop the hood. Climbing out of the car, she went to take a look. She may be a feared ice-cold CEO, but she had multiple technical degrees, she could fix a car.
She could.
Probably…
When she looked under the hood, she soon discovered that she was out of her depth. She did not know what anything did and she cursed her own disinterest in everything about cars except how they looked. She did not know what she was doing and by the faces of the others who joined her, neither did they.
“Yellow-“ “Not now White” She took a deep calming breath. “Just call someone.” Not that calming apparently. “Oh yes, because that is so easy.” White’s disdain was most definitely visible as she gesticulated to the area around them. “If you haven’t seen it, we are in the middle of nowhere. Who exactly are we going to call?”
And they were in the middle of nowhere, the only things visible were snow covered fields, a raging river next to them and the road stretching before them. In the distance, behind the river she still somehow sees the lights from a town and a hill behind it. The falling snow was certainly not helping matters.
That didn’t mean Yellow was going to admit anything to her infuriating sister. Yellow was going to punch White. She was really going to do it. That was until her gorgeous Yelena interrupted them. Really this just proved that Yelena was the perfect woman. She would take no arguments.
“Actually, the map shows that there are multiple garages nearby. Most are in Ocean Town, but there is one in Beach City. The city that is nearby”
Yellow took her positive thoughts back, she would take arguments. She pinched the bridge of her nose. “We just drove by a sign that said that the bridge to the city is out. Try the ones in Ocean Town.”
That led to all of them calling one of the nearby garages, slightly huddling together for warmth, however it seems that their luck really had turned to shit. Not one of those garbage workplaces was willing to drive out and fix their car. They cited that they were already on holiday or that the weather was too frightful. What kind of nonsense was that? Those bottom-feeders should be happy to get a job!
She was really going to pop a vein, and punch Blue for dragging them out here. She adjusted her thoughts; she was also going to punch White just because she could. While violence would not solve the problem they had, it would surely make her feel better.
Just as she had decided that this was the best course of action, she heard the cheerful voice of Penelope. While that wasn’t unusual, she liked to chatter, what was peculiar was that she was still talking on the phone.
“Really?! Yes, that is no problem. Uhuh, I can share my location. Thank you so much! Yes, I’ll see you soon.” And with that the pink haired woman hang up the phone, before sending a message. The others could only stare at the her in astonishment. Penelope excitedly turned to them.
“Okay, so the mechanic from Beach City is coming this way! She said that she’ll be there in 10 minutes tops!” And here Yellow could feel all her hope draining away. Of course, White’s woman hadn’t heard a word of what she had said.
“You do know that the bridge is broken, right.” The words came out quite sarcastically and she saw White give her sharp look. But before White could do anything the one-eyed woman laid a hand on her arm. “I did know actually! She said that its no problem, since the bridge is usually out around this time!”
“That’s amazing Penny! Well done!” Bella threw her arms around the other, while whisper-shouting the words. It still somewhat amazed her, how quiet Blue’s girl was even when she was trying to be loud. But she had to admit that Penelope’s plan had worked, though she wondered how the mechanic was coming here.
The was a large river with rapid waters separating the highway from what could only be Beach City in the distance. She also worried about the weather, it was slowly getting worse. The wind was picking up and she not so gently hurried Yelena back in the car. “You can watch from the windows, it’s getting too cold.” She could also see Bella, Blue and Penelope getting back into the car.
That left only her and White outside and she quietly cursed under her breath, rubbing her arms to gain some warmth. She would have loved to go into the car as well, but she wasn’t going to leave this issue with White of all people. Her maddening sister would sooner scare off the mechanic, than let them fix the car. White meanwhile was just standing there, undeterred, not feeling the cold at all and that only increased the desire to punch White.
Maybe she should just punch White. As a treat. Blue always said that she should get a hobby. Punching White sounded like a great one. Her increasingly violent thoughts were once again interrupted.
In the distance, from the direction of Beach City, she could see a tiny black dot slowly becoming larger. When it was close enough, she could see that it was a person traversing the grass field. A large bag was slung over their shoulder and on the other side they were holding what looked like a large plank.
When the person reached the river bank, they casually grabbed the plank, before slinging it over the river, somehow making it land perfectly and forming a bridge. The only thing Yellow could do was clench her jaw to prevent it from dropping.
The person was now casually walking across the plank over a raging river, seemingly not bothered at all by the large weight that hung on one side of her body. The complete confidence and balance stunned her and she could see that White even raised an eyebrow. Which for White meant that she was impressed.
Now that the person was closer, she could assume that she was female appearing, tightly packed in a winter coat and wearing a weird backpack. “Are you the Diamond family?” White’s voice rang out from beside her. “That is correct…” White trailed off and Yellow suddenly realized that they never got the name of the mechanic or garage from Penelope.
“Nice to meet you. My name is Pearl Quartz from the Beach City Garage. I will be helping you this evening”
