Chapter 1: shortbread

Chapter Text

Dear Pete,

I hope you’re okay with me sending this. Not sure what the whole mailing situation is at the Parker’s. I know it's only been a few days but in my defense, you don’t have a phone and you’re the only person that’ll get how funny this is. Anyways, earlier today our neighbor Patricia came over, long story but she makes this annual holiday fruitcake (it’s disgusting) and always insists on bringing us a slice which is honestly really nice of her, but it’s just that my mom and I both hate fruitcake so we always have to throw it out and I feel bad. But anyways, she came by and said that fruit has gotten too expensive to make it this year. Which, I know, terrible of me to find any joy in, but if the one thing this fucked economy can do for me is make me not have to pretend to like that godawful fruitcake I guess I’ll take what I can get. Anyways, I’m losing my point. So she didn't bring the fruitcake (thank god) and instead brought a tin of shortbread cookies, y’know those tins that are used for literally everything but cookies? Like you open it and there’s a sewing kit inside and random hard candies? Yeah, one of those. But she opened it, and it was full of those cookies with the red jelly in the middle and I couldn’t help myself. I bursted out laughing! She and my mom were so confused, but all I could think about was that time Stebbins gave you half of his jelly sandwich that day you forgot your lunch and your tongue got all swollen. Who would’ve thought you were allergic to strawberry jam? Hah! The cookies were actually really good, kind of the only festive thing I’ve done so far this break. How has it been for you? Write back if you can, you don’t have to.
