A doctor of mine suggested purchasing a journal, but I’ve proven to be more egotistical than I initially thought. Selfishly, I like the idea that all of this won’t simply be shoved into a drawer or a box or an attic someplace, eaten up by dust and time. I like knowing that someone else is on the other side of these, living and breathing and loving. I hope you stay that way for a long, long time, Alex. (And that you learn sometimes to be a bit selfish, too.)

For a minute, Ray thought he saw Pete's face fall; the scar by Pete's lip twisted a little bit as he looked away, suddenly focusing on his beer bottle like it was the most interesting thing in the world. After taking a swig Pete muttered “sure Ray, I got a lady”.

#47, Pete McVries, has a girl back home. It takes a while to get him to open up about it, he’s cagey about his home life, the tinfoil wrapped package of cookies in his pack, and the photograph he keeps folded into quarters and tucked into his shirt pocket. Almost everyone’s tried to get a peek at it over his shoulder at one point or another, and Olson even gets a warning for interference when he tries to snatch it from his hands.
“C’mon,” Olson whines. “Why don’t you want us to see her? She ugly or something?”
“Prettiest thing you’ve ever seen.” McVries is finally coaxed into saying. “Big brown eyes, red hair, soft all over.”

“See now this,” Pete wags a finger. “This is the source of my confusion, Ray. Because you seem very distracted in my classes. Can barely answer a question.” Pete reaches down into the desk drawer, retrieving several sheets of paper. Slowly, he places them face up on the desk, lorem ipsum copies with large red 100s circled at the top. “And yet, you are the only student who’s gotten a 100 on the last four of my quizzes.” Pete’s gaze is inscrutable. “Can you explain that to me?”
Distantly, Ray appreciates the commitment to the fantasy. The prop is a nice touch. There’s nothing comprehensible on them, but Ray reaches for them anyway, Pete leaning back to let him.
“I—I guess I just like the material, sir,” Ray offers.
