Work Text:
Today, I walk the aisle, although no groom
Awaits me at the altar - take my vows
Although the one I dedicate them to
Is absent - place a kiss upon the air -
And you, my bridesmaids - you will take my hands
And dance the night away in hollow hope
That someday hence, the fool who called herself
A prince will come to free me from this cage.
I see you all, dear sisters, as you were -
Mint green and white, puffed sleeves, a flush of rose
Upon the breast, perhaps - or bold, dark coats
With brass-bright buttons, cold as stolen sword
Against my throat - indeed, I see you still
The way you were when once you swore to slay
The Bride - the Rose Bride - one who once was I.
But now, you stand attendant at my side,
Resplendent in the matching floor-length red
I chose for this occasion - a small joke
In twisted humour, which you all accept
Without objection, as befits your dress.
Look deep into my eyes, friends, one and all:
To you, with blonde waves veiling still-false smile,
I give my false respect; to you, with wild
Blue locks, a nod of solidarity;
To you, who proudly wields fragility,
The cloudless gaze of one who understands;
To you plain maidens both, with simple hopes
And hearts with love denied, I give a touch
Of my bouquet of lilies, for good luck.
Today, I walk the aisle, although no groom
Awaits me at the altar - take my vows
Although the one I dedicate them to
Is absent - place a kiss upon the air -
And you, my bridesmaids - will you dance with me?
