They were all friends from the school on Kaeru island, each were in the same grade with the exception of Hikari in the grade above.
Kumiko welcomed those around her and did her best to cheer up others. She was quite popular at school, and she especially took care of her best friend Lily, who was abandoned by her parents and bullied for being blind in her right eye.
Lily and Kumiko have been friends for much longer than the rest, ever since Lily was taken to an orphanage and enrolled in the school, she met Kumiko at the school after she saved Lily from being bullied.
Maia and Haruna were always close with each other due to their neglectful families, while Hikari did her best to look out for all of them.
The group of girls were walking home from school when they noticed it’s cloudy out, everything is strangely quiet despite the crowds of people, it almost felt like the calm before the storm.
As they’re walking, they notice a group of people in the distance. Wooden rafts coming toward the island, with dirtied clothing and water seeping into their flesh.
On closer inspection they realized there were entire crowds of people. However, these weren’t ordinary people, they looked infected.
People were scared, they began running and hiding. Some died out from being bitten and attacking each other, while survivors ran as much as they could.
The girls escaped, still dressed in their school uniforms. Hikari ran to the bathrooms to hide at first, until Haruna went and took her with them.
Kumiko, Maia, and Lily found shelter within the now apocalyptic city, but it didn’t last long. Soon enough the infected began to break in, the other girls stayed hidden while Kumiko and Lily tried pushing them back.
Lily sacrificed herself to save Kumiko.
“LILY!”
“Thank you for taking care of me. I’ll always love you.”
“NO—PLEASE!”
The infected pulled her out of the shelter, Kumiko attempted to reach out as they took Lily away, but she couldn’t save the girl.
