Work Text:

Out of all places in the world, you didn’t expect to spend Christmas at the mutant school and especially not with the cutest mutant you knew.

The Xavier manor had transformed overnight. Twinkling lights decorated every doorway, accompanied with wreaths hanging from the doors themselves. A massive tree stood tall beside the stairway, twinkling with even more lights and other decorations. The kitchen was bustling, something definitely cinnamon-y baking there, and down the hall you heard Bing Crosby’s White Christmas echoing. You couldn’t help but smile at the sight.

“I helped with decorations,” you suddenly heard from behind you, and you yelped, jumping forward slightly before turning to see Kurt.

He blinked, slightly spooked himself. “I— I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”

You shook your head, sighing. “It’s okay, I was just too deep in my thoughts.” You took a look at the decorations again, suddenly feeling kind of awkward. It was never particularly easy to be around your crush, even when you always craved for it. “They’re beautiful.”

“Danke,” he replied, grinning at the compliment. “In circus, we learned why presentation matters.”

“Well, it clearly paid off,” you chuckled, pulling your sweater sleeves over your fingers in an attempt to calm your nerves, before turning towards kitchen. “What are they doing there?”

“I think I heard someone talking about cookies,” Kurt said, grinning. “And later they’ll make gingerbreads. I haven’t had gingerbreads since I was a child.”

“Really?” you asked, raising your eyebrows. “Didn’t the circus celebrate Christmas?”

“Nein,” Kurt sighed, shaking his head. “We were too busy for that, Christmas was booked with Christmas events where we were touring.”

You frowned. “That must have been hard for a child.”

“It was,” Kurt mumbled, but then smiled again. “But this year I will be able to celebrate for all the past years.”

You chuckled again, slowly strolling towards the kitchen door, leaning against the doorframe to watch students running around the kitchen, flour puffing as they worked. “I hope professor Xavier knows what he’s doing, a crowd of children and an oven is rarely a good combination.”

Kurt came to lean on the opposite doorframe, your shoulders brushing together. “Ja, he had someone tune the oven somehow to make it, um, mutant child proof.”

One of the children spotted you and giggled, turning to her friends and whispering something as they all glanced above you, which resulted into a flurry of more giggles. You looked at Kurt, puzzled, who followed their gaze before he frowned. You followed his example and… saw a mistletoe.

All blood in your face left momentarily, before the blood cells flooded back tenfold, as if they had gone call all their friends join them in packing your face as full as possible.

Kurt scratched the back of his head. “Well… I know that’s a human tradition.”

You swallowed. “Yep.”

“Um… you don’t have to do it.”

“I… wouldn’t be opposed against it?”

“Ja?”

You hummed, turning towards him. “Uh… at least not if it’s you.”

He blinked at your words, before smiling shyly. “Can I… uh. May I?”

You swallowed again, nodding slowly. He brought his three-fingered hand on your cheek, giving you time to pull away if you changed your mind, before he leaned in and meeting your lips with his. Fireworks went off in your head the moment it did, and the kitchen bustle silenced the moment your lips touched, and you even had enough courage to wrap your arms around him.

The kiss was over soon, far too soon for your taste, but at least Kurt didn’t seem awkward, at least not in a negative way, not like he regretted it or that it had been unpleasant for him.

“Was it… okay?” he mumbled, and you nodded, unable to hold back a bright smile.

“Merry Christmas, Kurt,” you mumbled, stroking his jacket.

He mirrored your smile, baring the full row of his teeth as his tail circled around your ankle, probably unconsciously but you didn’t mind it. He sighed contently. “Merry Christmas.”
