Work Text:
The sky was dark, but the millions of tiny dancing snowflakes pouring down from the sky were illuminated by the streetlights lining your street. It was an undeniably beautiful, magical scene, but you weren't at all in the mood for it. Glaring out of your bedroom window, you felt your heart sink yet again, then flopped down into your bed (that had once been Betty) with an unhappy groan.
So much for "no white Blissmas this year." You could've strangled the weathercasters who'd been so woefully incorrect. (Then again, maybe it was your own fault for taking the word of a weather report from a week ago.)
Biting your lip, you cast your eyes up to the window now above your head, watching the flakes fly from your upside-down vantage point and willing them to stop.
The mindless little things paid no heed to your silent pleas. If anything, it looked like it started snowing harder. Not that the snow stopping now would make any difference; it'd already been going for hours and the roads were completely covered. There was over a foot on the ground by that point. Driving would be an insane notion in these conditions, and it was exactly that which had you in such a sour mood.
Reaching for your phone on the bedside table, your frown of frustration lightened into one of worry as your stomach gave an anxious lurch. You hadn't heard any sounds to notify you of any new messages, but...maybe you'd just missed one coming through?
No such luck. When you opened up the message chain you shared with Eddie and Volt, you saw the text you'd sent them when it had become clear that the storm wouldn't be just a passing snow squall:
'The roads look like they're getting bad. You guys better not come. Please just stay safe. Don't worry about me.'
You'd sent that a little over an hour ago. There had been no reply since then. All you could think was that your two lovers were angry with you. That they believed you didn't actually want to see them, even though that couldn't be further from the truth.
At the same time, you were sure (or at least you hoped) that wasn't the case. That your mind was just playing tricks on you and making the worst out of something that wasn't a problem at all.
But...it was the what if of it all that you couldn't help lingering on. What if you had upset them? What if they couldn't even find the words to describe their disappointment, and so hadn't bothered to say anything at all? What other explanation was there? Why else would they have gone so long without sending you a reply?
The doorbell rang.
Knocked right out of your thoughts, you sat bolt upright in bed, your heart racing. Your wide eyes shot towards the landing outside your room leading down to the front door.
It couldn't be...Could it?
Without giving even a single thought to your pajama-clad appearance, you sprang out of bed and sprinted down the stairs, nearly tripping over yourself in your haste to answer the door. As soon as you reached it, your fingers fumbled with the locks, then grabbed the doorknob, twisted it, swung the door open, and—
There they were. Volt, with his dazzling smile, bundled to the nines in a dark coat, scarf, and gloves, hardly a striking white hair out of place (though you could just barely make out several huge flakes of snow adorning it like a crown from the heavens.) And, of course, Eddie right beside him. The snow in his hair was far more noticeable, stars dotting his black locks as though a reflection of the night sky hidden behind the clouds above. Unlike Volt, he had only thrown on his usual red coat, but he still seemed similarly unbothered by the weather. The grin on his lips was more subdued than his partner's, but undeniably genuine, touching his eyes. At both of their booted feet, their suitcases were resting on the ground as they waited for you to invite them in.
But you were still stunned. All you could do at the moment was gape at them both in disbelief. The way they were smiling at you was as though there wasn't a whole-ass blizzard coming down right behind them beyond the shelter of the roof. As if they hadn't just had to drive an hour through such terrible weather.
To get to you.
As if he could read your mind, Eddie was the first to speak up, his voice a mix of smug and adoring that only he would ever be able to pull off. "No road conditions could ever be bad enough to keep us away."
You knew right away what he was doing: replying in person to the text you'd sent them, using the fact that they had successfully made the drive to further prove his point. Somewhere in the back of your mind, you wondered just how much of the drive he'd spent shuffling words around before landing on the perfect delivery. It had been worth it; you were impressed.
At your continued speechlessness, Volt's grin softened into something unbearably affectionate. "We weren't about to let you spend Blissmas alone, live wire," he informed you, "You must know that."
"Never," Eddie agreed.
Warmth had rapidly started building in your heart as soon as you'd laid eyes on them at your front door, but now, as it became too much for you to contain inside yourself any longer, part of it escaped you in the form of an excited squeal as you leapt out the door to meet them, throwing your arms around both their necks and holding them tight. "I can't believe you two actually made it!" you exclaimed, "God, you're both so stubborn, and I love you for it!"
They both laughed at that, but while you were hugging them, your grasping fingers inadvertently found the ends of Volt's hair, letting you feel how damp it was getting with the melting snow. You drew quickly away to cast a critical eye over them, though kept a hold of their shoulders at the same time. "Why aren't either of you wearing a hat?" you fretted, catching Eddie's hair between your fingers and finding it just as damp, "You trying to catch hypothermia?"
Eddie eyed you up and down in return as a small crease formed between his brows. "If anyone's not dressed for the weather, it's you," he pointed out.
Belatedly, Volt wrapped an arm around your shoulders to try to shelter you. He tutted. "You're shivering, darling." Alas, it was true. In your excitement, you'd barely noticed, but your fingers and toes (exposed and in socks, respectively) were beginning to get a little numb. "Let's continue this inside, shall we?" Volt suggested, and you nodded your fervent agreement as he started to usher you back through the open front door.
Eddie followed the two of you just far enough to drop his and Volt's cases inside the foyer. "I'll be right back," he told you both, "I'm gonna unload the rest of the stuff from the van."
He didn't get the chance to make good on his words, as you grabbed his arm just in time to catch him. "In this snow?" you asked incredulously, pleading, "Can't it wait until morning?"
In truth, Eddie was done for as soon as he looked back at you and caught sight of your eyes that pleaded with him just as ardently as your voice had.
Volt hummed, drawing Eddie's attention to him. "We do have everything we need for the night in these bags," he mused, trailing off ponderously while tilting his head with a little pout.
And with that, Eddie's mind might as well have been made up for him. He let out a sigh that wished it could be irritated, but sounded far too fond. "Alright..." he agreed, feigning reluctance as he latched the door to the outside closed and finally shut out the cold, "Tomorrow."
That meant you wouldn't have to wait any longer than necessary to get Eddie right back in your arms along with Volt. Taking the win, you beamed at him as he started removing his coat and boots, rolling his eyes affectionately when he caught the triumphant look on your face.
Your attention was quickly captured by Volt, however. Being the first to escape from the confines of all his outerwear, he opened his arms to you, his grin suggesting he was about to get up to some kind of mischief. "Now, dear spark," he purred, "since you're so worried over us, why don't you come here and warm me up?"
The bluntness of his request pulled a pleased blush to your cheeks. Still, you didn't need to be asked twice. You stepped right into his waiting arms, letting him wrap you up in them. "Usually the other way around, isn't it?" you commented, gazing up into those captivating, light eyes of his.
Volt chuckled lowly. "Perhaps," he replied, his lips brushing against yours in the quickly dwindling space between you, "though it still works both ways quite well, doesn't it?"
The searing kiss he led you into certainly proved that. His lips, at first chilled from the harsh wind outside, quickly warmed under your attentions until he felt like he was back to his usual temperature. That didn't stop him from deepening the kiss, his arm tightening around your back to hold your body even closer to his.
That was, until you felt a set of calloused, frigid fingers under your chin tugging your head to the side and away from Volt's lips. "My turn," Eddie mumbled as he claimed your lips instead, barely giving you the time to catch your breath.
You couldn't speak for the boys, but you were getting deliciously warm. The pounding of your heart made sure of that, its pace picking up at Volt's low laughter in your ear, at Eddie's insistent kisses and nibbles against your lips, at being in the middle of the two of them, right where you'd most missed being. Not even those cold fingers trailing down to cup the side of your neck could keep your temperature from growing warmer still.
All of a sudden, the rightness of the moment caught up with you, filling your heart to bursting, and you smiled broadly against Eddie's lips. Light laughter escaped from your throat between kisses, and Eddie broke away to peer at you, bemused questions in his eyes.
Joining him in his observation, Volt grinned down at you softly. He was happy enough just to see you happy, but he opted to ask the question Eddie clearly wanted to hear the answer to: "What is it, love?"
Trying to settle the joy in your heart, you at least managed to hold in any more laughter, but there was no controlling the smile across your face. You looked between the two men you loved so much, your face flushed with the warmth they brought to you, and wondered how in the world you could ever explain it. You quickly decided there was no way, and so you shrugged and said simply, "You're here."
Simple words, but Volt and Eddie both understood what you were saying. Their smiles softened. Volt held you closer while Eddie lay his head against yours, gazing into your eyes all the while.
"We're home."
Much later, once the three of you had showered and changed into warmer lounge clothes (including you, as your pajamas had gotten rather wet from hugging your boys fresh from the elements), you all settled comfortably into the cozy Blissmas Eve together. The living room lights were all off. Only the fire in the hearth and the colorful electric lights of the tree by the bay window lit the space in a soft, dim glow. Joining the gently crackling fire, the jazzy strains of the Chintz Guaraldi Trio filled the air from the nearby record player. Eddie had taken up residence on the end of the couch closest to the fire, his feet kicked up on the coffee table as he lounged, nursing a drink from your bar cart and watching you dance with Volt to the music.
With Eddie's eyes on you, and Volt's arms around your waist leading you to sway gently along with him, you felt like your heart truly couldn't get any fuller. Eddie had called this home, and you had to agree. You couldn't possibly imagine a better definition of the word.
