Demetrius knew that life was full of surprises. Even in the realm of scientific discovery, for each pattern he found or each law that nature followed, there was always something new to find. That’s why every day, he liked to go outside and test the soil ph levels or see what showed up under a microscope when he brought in a sample from the lake. Still, for all the new things he learned, there were patterns to be found. A range where results were expected, even if day to day, the exact numbers varied.
Robin, his wife, was different than science. There was nothing about her that he could predict if you gave him enough time or enough lab equipment. Every time he thought he figured her out, she surprised him with a new project, a new idea, a new passion. When he thought he knew what she wanted, she took him off guard by expecting something he never would have guessed. He both loved and hated how unpredictable she could be. The only thing that scared him was that someday, he would fail to discover what she wanted from him because he couldn’t figure her out, and if that happened, he was scared to lose her.
The thing about science is, even when it’s unpredictable, you can adapt. You can learn how to deal with the changes, can chart what direction things are going. With people, with Robin, Demetrius never could find all the answers. She constantly astonished him, but as long as he could be by her side, he was willing to keep learning every new aspect she would show him.
