The conference room on Starbase 7 was filled with dignitaries from across three sectors, but Captain James T. Kirk only had eyes for his First Officer.
It had started innocently enough. The Andorian ambassador had been droning on about trade routes for the better part of an hour when Kirk caught Spock's eye across the table. The Vulcan's right eyebrow lifted — just a fraction, barely perceptible to anyone who didn't know him. But Kirk knew him. That particular arch meant This speaker's logic is as stable as a neutron star in supernova.
Kirk bit back a smile and let his eyelashes flutter downward in mock-serious attention to the ambassador's words, then glanced back at Spock with an expression of exaggerated innocence. I'm being the model of diplomatic decorum, see?
Spock's other eyebrow joined the first, both climbing toward his hairline in what Kirk had privately dubbed the "Fascinating, Captain" position. Translation: Your performance would not convince a first-year Academy cadet.
The corner of Kirk's mouth twitched. He blinked slowly at Spock, a languid sweep of lashes that would have made Yeoman Rand proud. I have no idea what you mean, Mr. Spock.
"Captain Kirk?" The Andorian ambassador had stopped speaking. "Do you concur with Starfleet's position?"
"Absolutely," Kirk said smoothly, having no idea what position that was. He let his gaze drift to Spock with another flutter of lashes. Help?
One eyebrow descended while the other remained elevated—Spock's version of a smirk. You should have been paying attention. But the Vulcan stepped in anyway. "The Captain is expressing his agreement with the proposed modifications to the shipping lanes, which would reduce transit time by point-three-seven percent while maintaining adequate safety protocols."
Kirk rewarded him with a warm smile and what could only be described as a batting of eyelashes that was entirely unnecessary and completely deliberate.
Both of Spock's eyebrows dropped into a flat line. His eyes narrowed infinitesimally. If Kirk didn't know better, he'd say the Vulcan looked flustered.
The meeting continued, but so did their silent exchange. When Kirk suggested a "creative solution" to a resource dispute, Spock's eyebrows performed an intricate dance that Kirk interpreted as Creative is a generous description of that chaos.Kirk responded by propping his chin on his hand and gazing at Spock through his lashes with such theatrical adoration that Dr. McCoy — who had been forced to attend for medical treaty reasons — nearly choked on his drink.
By the time they adjourned, Spock's eyebrows had communicated approximately seventeen different variations of exasperation, amusement, and what might have been fondness. Kirk's eyelashes had conveyed innocence, mischief, mock-hurt, and triumph.
"Gentlemen," McCoy muttered as they exited into the corridor, "that was the most absurd display of — whatever that was — I've ever witnessed. And I've seen Tribbles mate."
"I'm sure I don't know what you mean, Bones," Kirk said, his eyes wide and innocent behind a sweep of lashes.
Spock's right eyebrow climbed. "Indeed, Doctor. The Captain and I were merely engaging in standard non-verbal communication protocols."
"Standard," McCoy repeated flatly. "Right. And I'm the Queen of England."
As McCoy stalked off toward the Starbase's medical facilities, Kirk turned to Spock with a grin. "I think we scandalized him."
"Your ocular muscles received quite the workout, Captain." Spock's eyebrows settled into a position that Kirk had learned meant affection, even if the Vulcan would never admit it.
"Your eyebrows aren't exactly stationary, Mr. Spock."
"Vulcan eyebrows are merely... expressive."
"Right. Expressive." Kirk leaned in slightly, lowering his voice. "And what exactly were they expressing when I suggested that creative solution?"
Both eyebrows rose. "That inquiry ventures into dangerous territory."
Kirk blinked up at him, slow and deliberate. "Dangerous?"
For a moment, Spock's careful control wavered. His eyes darkened slightly, and both eyebrows descended into what could only be called a smolder. "Captain, if you continue to deploy your eyelashes as tactical weapons, I may be forced to retaliate."
"Is that a threat, Commander?"
"It is a promise."
Kirk laughed, warm and genuine, and Spock's expression softened into something almost tender — communicated, naturally, by the precise angle and elevation of his eyebrows.
As they walked back to the Enterprise, Kirk reflected that they might be the only captain and first officer in Starfleet history who could conduct an entire flirtation with nothing but eyebrows and eyelashes.
And honestly? He wouldn't have it any other way.
Captain's Log, Supplemental: Mr. Spock's eyebrows should be classified as dangerous weapons. I plan to file a formal complaint. Right after I practice my eyelash technique in the mirror.
