13. I Will Never Let You Fall

Summary:

Yelena is about to be killed by an evil organization, and Bob—the Sentry—is not going to let it pass

Notes:

Felt like writing some hard action.

Work Text:

Yelena was pushed out of the elevator with a rod very much like hers, her hands tied behind her back with a thick wire. The men in black led her toward the heliport, where massive gusts of wind blew as if to topple them over. She was brought all the way to the edge, but she didn't bother to look down. She knew she was forty-seven floors above ground, and she was already prepared for the impact, the blackout of her vision and mind. Because this was probably what her sister's final moments were like, and some part of her had always wished to meet the same end.

"Any last words?" the leader of the men said, standing beside her, his eyes filled with pride and a sense of superiority.

Yelena responded coldly, without facing the man, "I have nothing to say to bastards like you."

His eyebrow twitched, and he smirked in rage. "All right, then. Time to make a spectacle out of you...New Avenger."

That was the cue. Yelena was given a big shove with the rod, and she fell straight down, the wind hitting her face like a thousand whips. She closed her eyes and gritted her teeth, bracing herself for the thud, the splat, the ultimate end. She had no regrets. There was nothing she needed to hold onto, nothing keeping her from plunging into a blissful void.

Except Bob. His smile, his deep blue eyes, his sweet voice when he called her name...she wished she could've seen him one last time, felt the warmth of his embrace before getting trapped in the cold forever. Maybe one last kiss, at least, before she had left him to tackle this mission.

She slightly opened her eyes. Her tears floated upward, carried by the wind, while she kept on going down, down, down.

Until a pair of hands snatched her away and cradled her in a warm light.

Yelena looked up to see the solemn and furious face of Bob, who was wearing black tactical gear with streaks of gold here and there. He shot up to the sky at an incredible speed and landed on the heliport with a crash, leaving cracks in the concrete beneath his feet.

With glowing eyes, he looked up at the man in black, who said with another smirk to hide his panic, "Sentry...Didn't expect you to show up."

Bob gently put Yelena down and broke the wire shackling her hands with his telekinesis.

"Wait here. I'll take care of them."

"Bob," Yelena said, grabbing his wrist. "Don't forget. No killing."

"...Only if they don't make me."

Bob shifted his ferocious gaze back to the men, but before he could advance any further, the leader commanded the others to ready their weapons, which looked like guns with megaphones attached to them. When they pulled the triggers, a horde of high-frequency sound waves was unleashed, causing Yelena to cover her ears. Bob was pushed back by the force of the waves, but he retaliated by using his telekinetic powers to tear off pieces of concrete and throw them at the men. They were all knocked down except for the leader, who had managed to duck in time. He pulled out a handgun and started shooting at Bob, who deflected the bullets while also burning all of the strange weapons with his eyes.

Left with no other way to fight back, the men stood up to tackle Bob one by one, but they were absolutely no match for him. He grabbed them by the neck and tossed them aside, deflected their attacks with a mere stare, and sent them all flying with a shockwave. He then noticed the leader trying to flee, so he choked him with an invisible hand and pulled him back.

"This isn't over, Sentry...!" the man said, struggling. "Our brothers and sisters will come for you and your team! Someday, we will kill you...after shredding your girlfriend to pieces!"

Bob's eyes flashed in anger, and he tightened his telekinetic grip with an added force that broke the man's bones, little by little. The man let out a soundless scream and coughed out blood, a sight which fueled Bob's spirit and implanted in him a desire for murder. For carnage.

"Bob, stop!"

He was interrupted by a firm hand on his shoulder, and he turned to meet Yelena's desperate gaze.

"You've done enough. Let him go. Now!"

As he slowly realized the bloody act he was trying to commit, the flash went out of his eyes, and he loosened his grip at last. The man collapsed with a thud, writhing in immense pain.

"Come on, let's go. The others are waiting," Yelena said, tugging on Bob's limp hand.

Bob nodded silently and picked Yelena up before running toward the edge and floating in the air once more. They flew across the night sky for several minutes without saying a word, until Bob finally spoke with a grit of his teeth.

"...You should've let me kill them," he said. "They need to pay for what they've done to you. They all need to suffer."

"Hey, Bob. Bob," Yelena said softly, putting her hand on his cheek. "I'm okay. I'm not hurt at all. You saved me in time, so there's nothing to worry about. And even if I did fall back there, which I know you don't even want to think about...you can't let that get to you. You're a hero, Bob. I'm not the only one you need to save."

"It doesn't matter," Bob said, tears filling up his eyes. "None of it matters without you."

"Then do it for me. Stay who you are. I don't want you to turn out like them. Okay?"

Bob stared into Yelena's pleading eyes, and, though he was still unsure of his stability as a hero or whether he could contain his anger toward her assailants, he nodded out of a desire to follow her will, to keep himself from defiling her ideals.

"Good," Yelena said with a smile, giving him a brief yet sincere kiss.

Bob smiled, too, cradling his beloved closer to his chest, swearing once again to protect her with his life.
