Work Text:
The shift was pretty uneventful for Ian, but his heart was racing the entire moment, up until he clocked out. He couldn’t even bring himself to play Boblox during break, it was just too exciting, a date with his boss, his crush. He was more cheery that day, he tried to hide it, but of course, everyone noticed it. His patients, the intern, hell, even Ada. She was the most curious, asking why he was so happy, grinning while working, but he switched the topic everytime. Ian checked in for the final time before heading out, racing home to change out of his work clothes.
Edega was waiting at the back of the hospital, brandishing a tan trench coat. Under it was a white shirt, though unnoticable, there were some cat hair sticking on it. Edega checked his watch before looking around, he spotted Ian waving at him. Ian was wearing a gray sweater, with a pair of jeans. Looked the same as his work clothes, minus the lab coat, Edega thought, but rest assured, he did change clothes.
“Y-You look great..”
“You.. look the same.”
“Yeah.. sorry, I don’t go out often so.. m-my closet didn’t have much choices.”
“It’s fine.”
Ian checked his phone, it’s 7 PM.
“S-Sorry, I should’ve booked a cab.. The restaurant isn’t far from here, would you be fine with walking?”
Edega nodded. With that, Ian led the way. He tried to make some small talk, but couldn’t think of anything. Save it for dinner, Ian. Nervously, he looked around, admiring the city, and Edega of course. It wasn’t as loud as the other nights, much to Edega’s amusement. Neither of them often go out, so it was pretty awkward. Soon enough, they arrived at the destination.
“Looks fancy.”
“Haha- Thank you..”
They headed inside the restaurant and was greeted by a hostess.
“Welcome to Weatherspoon! Do you have a reservation, sirs?”
“Y-Yes! It’s under.. Ian.”
The hostess flipped through her clipboard.
“Ian.. Aha, there we go. Right this way!”
She led Ian to his table, Edega followed behind. The place was a bit crowded, but Edega didn’t mind.
“The server will take your orders in a moment, in the meantime, would you two like any drinks?”
“A-Ah.. Uh,” Ian looked at Edega.
“Just water please.”
The hostess nodded and wrote down on her clipboard, before heading back to the entrance.
“I want one of those.” Edega whispered to Ian.
“H-Huh?”
“Yeah, the clipboard she had.”
“O-OH! Oh.. Yeah….”
A waiter placed two glasses of water on their table. Ian took a sip from nervousness (and excitement) while shaking his legs. Edega was sitting still, looking at the menu.. almost as a substitute for his clipboard. Soon enough, the server got to their table.
“Good evening, have you decided on what to have yet?”
“I’ll have a salmon fillet.”
“A-And a ribeye steak.. Please.”
The server wrote down on her note. “Anything else?”
“Hm.. A chicken noodle soup please, thank you.”
She nodded and went in the kitchen. Ian was sweating despite the restaurant’s air conditioning.
“Are you alright?”
“Y-Yeah! Yeah.. just. Nervous.”
Edega brushed his leg against Ian’s from under the table, calming him down.
“T-Thank you..”
Edega nodded and took a sip from his glass. They sat, waiting for their food. Now’s time for the small talk, Ian. Come on, say something.
“H-H-How was your-“
Before he could speak up, food arrived at the table, killing off any confidence he had left.
“Enjoy your food, sirs.” The waitress bowed before heading off.
Edega wiped the cutleries with tissue, handing half of them to Ian.
“You were saying?”
“…Howwasyourday” [How was your day] He sped through the sentence.
“It was alright, not too bad.” Edega replied as he took a bite out of the fish, it was soft and tender, much to his liking. He paused to look at Ian. “Are you.. going to eat?”
“Yes! Yess.. Sorry..” Ian sighed.
More touching under the table, Ian blushed and got on with his dish.
“How was yours?”
“H-Huh?”
“How was your day, Ian.”
“I uh.. Don’t really remember, to be completely honest…”
“…?”
“I was… waiting for tonight the entire day, so everything else seemed like a blur.”
“I see.” Another bite to his food.
The two sat and eat, occasionally drinking from their glasses.
“Would you like to try some?”
“Eh?”
“My food. Would you like to try some. You’ve been eyeing it for awhile.”
“Oh! Oh no.. I.. Iwasadmiringyoubut [I was admiring you, but] I’d love to.. yes.”
Edega raised his fork to Ian’s mouth. An indirect kiss.
“It’s great.. You have great taste in food.”
“Thank you.”
After awhile, their plates were clean. Edega shared his chicken noodle soup too, but they ate with different spoons. Ian was about to raise his hand for the check, he was stopped by Edega.
“Hm?”
“Dessert, of course.”
“Haha, you’re right..”
Edega asked for a mousse cake, while Ian stuck to vanilla ice-cream. They shared that too.. Edega really do have good taste in food.
Ian called for the check, his eyes widen when he glanced at it. Jeez, was it really that expensive?
“I can pay for it if you didn’t bring the money.”
“N-No! It’s not that.. I’m just surprised.”
“I’ll tip, then.”
“…That would be appreciated, thank you.”
They headed out of the restaurant. Ian checked his phone, it was 8:30 PM.
“Thanks, Ian. I had a pleasant time.”
“O-Oh.. The date’s not over yet..”
“Hm?”
“There’s a fair down the street.. I wanted to take you there.”
“Very well then. It’s the weekends tomorrow anyway.”
They walked to the small fair, despite the size, it was pretty packed. They had tame activities like coloring statues, magnetic fishing.. to more extreme rides like the rollercoaster and drop tower, with a long line occupying it. Ian was already shaking from the thought of going up there.
“Wanna try?” Edega pointed at the drop tower.
It was the LAST thing Ian would want to try. Still, he nodded and went to buy them tickets for it. They waited in line, Ian’s heart racing stronger as it got to their turn. They sat next to each other, Ian gripping Edega’s hand as the person operating it secured their belts. The platform went up slowly. Edega took the time to enjoy the night view, lights emanating from the distant. Ian.. was scared that he’ll lose his glasses. As it reached the peak, the platform fell down fast. Everyone else on the ride screamed in excitement, or frightened. Edega was quiet, Ian closed his eyes while holding his hand tight. It stopped near the ground, before rising up again. Here we go again….
They got off the ride, Ian covered his mouth, almost vomiting. Edega chuckled at the sight, knowing full-well it would happen. Despite being scared of height, Ian suggested the ferris wheel next. After putting Ian through that, Edega agreed.
The ferris wheel had heart-shaped pods, it made Ian blush, Edega didn’t seem to mind. They headed inside and sat directly to each other. Edega looked outside and down at the ground, while Ian looked at Edega.
“Thank you..”
“Hm?”
“Thank you.. for giving me a chance.”
“Ah. Well, thank you for treating me to this fine date. I had a good time.”
“Me too.. And I’m glad you did.”
As the pod rose to it’s peak, Ian leaned in for a kiss. Edega returned the gesture, holding the other’s cheek as it turned into a French kiss. They broke the kiss mid-way down, breathing heavily as they looked at each other.
“Iloveyou”
“Repeat that?”
“I-I-I lloov” His throat tightened.
“Say it, Ian.”
“I love you!”
The pod came to a stop, people were staring at them. If Ian could bury his head to the ground right there, he would. He laughed awkwardly as they exited. Edega held his hand and whispered,
“I love you, too.”
Edega suggested statue painting to calm Ian down. I guess there’s still time.. Ian agreed. They picked a small statue of a rabbit, taking turn coloring it. Edega’s strokes were delicate, as he was a surgeon, Ian’s strokes were messy, a bit shaky, but overall, it turned out well. Ian gave Edega the statue to take home, as memory of tonight.
Walking out of the loud environment and back to the late night street again, it was time to go home.
“Thank you again, I had a really good time.”
“O-Of course, sir.”
One last kiss before they headed their separate ways.
