LENGTH: 13 m 47s (thirteen minutes and forty-seven seconds)
STATUS: Final Draft, Ready for Publication
PROJECTED PUB DATE: November 20, 2021
CAMERA A, a center shot. SHANE Hollander and ILYA Rozanov are sitting behind the table. Shane is wearing a red sweater polo and Ilya is wearing a grey sweater with a deep v-neck, his gold cross visible. They’re holding hands on top of the table; Shane is looking at Ilya while Ilya smiles at the camera.
ILYA
Shane made rules for this time around. Each choose half the things, no lube, no sexy photos of me. Very possessive of him…
SHANE
Are you ser—
ILYA
…very silly, when he already has my heart.
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of several quick close-up shots of various items from different angles with a psychedelic background. Switch to CAMERA A center shot of Ilya and Shane in a smaller frame against the same background, with multiple items out in front of them on the table.
ILYA
Hi GQ, I am Ilya Rozanov.
SHANE
And I am Shane Hollander, and these are our ten essentials.
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of several more quick close-up shots of various items from different angles with a psychedelic background. White TEXT layover reads “MY ESSENTIALS” above “SHANE HOLLANDER & ILYA ROZANOV.”
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of close-up shots of Centaurs jerseys, some folded from the front and others displaying the back of the jerseys, with “Hollander 24” and “Rozanov 81” visible from several angles. White TEXT layover reads “Centaurs Jerseys”.
Switch to CAMERA A center shot of Ilya and Shane each pulling their respective jerseys from the table towards themselves. Ilya picks his jersey up, letting it fall unfolded as he inspects the front of it, while Shane keeps his folded on the table in front of him.
SHANE
The first thing we’ve got here are our Centaurs jerseys.
Switch to CAMERA B, left close-up shot of Shane tracing “OTTAWA” with his index finger.
SHANE
I’m still getting used to seeing my name in black and red. And no “C,” you know, is pretty weird.
Switch to CAMERA A, center shot.
ILYA
You get used to it eventually—and your “C” is coming, I think. But the logo is still quite funny to me.
SHANE
I grew up rooting for the Centaurs, so it was already pretty familiar.
SHANE
While my time with Montreal will always be special, it’s really beautiful to have this chance to play for my hometown team. The team already made a great run last year, obviously, with the guys who were already here. I’m not coming in trying to be the white knight, I’m trying to fit into what they’re already building here. We all have the same goal: to bring Ottawa its first Cup.
ILYA
Is also special to play with me, of course.
SHANE
That, too.
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of close-up shots of a medium-sized mutt with brown, white, and grey fur from several angles. White TEXT layover reads “Anya”.
Switch to CAMERA A Ilya reaching below the table, and pulling the dog onto his lap.
ILYA
This is my beautiful girl, Anya.
ILYA
Our social media manager, Harris, introduced me to her when I was at his family’s house for dinner. Was love at first sight. I wanted dog for long time.
SHANE
He got her without telling me and only told me he had a surprise. I just showed up and she was there.
SHANE
I was kind of nervous about all the things that could go wrong, honestly. But it was pretty immediately obvious how happy she makes him.
ILYA
One down, five to go.
SHANE
You are delusional.
Switch to CAMERA B, left close-up shot of Shane scratching Anya’s head fondly.
SHANE
No more dogs until retirement.
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of a key ring from several angles. The key ring has a house key, Land Rover key fob, Mercedes key fob, and a leather loop imprinted with the centaur logo. White TEXT layover reads “Keys”.
Switch to CAMERA A center shot of Shane catching the keys being thrown to him from the left. He inspects them, then smiles at Ilya. Ilya takes them from Shane’s hand and places them on the table so they are visible to the camera.
ILYA
Last time we both brought keys. We are keeping tradition. But these we share.
SHANE
This has the key fobs to both of our cars, which are both a little more practical than the Ilya’s prior collection.
ILYA
Gave up my beautiful cars for this guy, can you believe it?
SHANE
You didn’t get rid of all of them.
ILYA
Most important key here is the house key. Now we have just one. Shane moved in with me when he signed with Ottawa.
SHANE
I have to admit, he has good taste in furniture.
ILYA
I have good taste in many things.
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of close-up shots of two iPhones from several angles. One has a clear, clean case. The other has the same image of Ilya’s face printed repeatedly over it. White TEXT layover reads “Phones”.
Switch to CAMERA A center shot of Ilya picking up the phone with the clear case and Shane picking up the phone with Ilya’s face on it. A look of confusion spreads across Shane’s face as he picks his phone and flips it over to look at the back of the phone. Ilya watches him, clearly holding back laughter. Shane looks up at the camera, visibly annoyed.
SHANE
So, these are our phones. Except, this is not my case.
ILYA
Well, it is now.
SHANE
It won’t be as soon as this interview is over, and I find out what you did with my old one.
ILYA
You mean you do not want to look at my pretty face?
SHANE
I don’t need a phone case to do that.
ILYA
Ahh, so you do think is pretty!
Switch to CAMERA B, left close-up shot of Shane.
SHANE
[sighs] I chose our phones because they have been pretty important for us to keep up with each other, especially when we used to be on different teams. Hopefully they will be kind of less important now that we are on the same team.
Switch to CAMERA A, center shot.
ILYA
Still important to me when you randomly decide we should sleep in separate rooms on the road and I want to hear you while I fall asleep.
SHANE
Oh. I… yeah, I guess they are still nice for that.
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of close-up shots of two red whistles on gold lanyards from several angles. White TEXT layover reads “Whistle”.
Switch to CAMERA A center shot of Ilya picking up the whistle from the table and handing one to Shane.
ILYA
The whistles are essential for our hockey camps.
SHANE
We hold the Game Changers Hockey Camps every summer to help raise money for the Irina Foundation, which we also created.
Switch to CAMERA B, left close-up shot of Ilya.
ILYA
Is named after my mother, who suffered from depression. The foundation helps raise money and awareness for mental illness, is a very important to us both. We also have our own struggles.
Switch to CAMERA A, center shot.
SHANE
The foundation was also a way for us to work together before we came out.
ILYA
Da. And is also nice to work with kids.
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of close-up shots of rainbow hockey tape from several angles. White TEXT layover reads “Pride Hockey Tape”.
Switch to CAMERA A center shot of the hockey tape rolling across the table, Shane stopping it softly with his left hand. Ilya is smiling at Shane.
ILYA
You are [bleep]ing sap.
SHANE
Ilya, you aren’t supposed to— You know what, never mind.
ILYA
What? I can not say bad words? I thought this was free country.
SHANE
Anyways… This is pride hockey tape. Regular hockey tape was one of my essentials last time, but now that I am out, I am so excited to use the pride hockey tape all of the time. Before, I only felt comfortable using it on pride nights.
ILYA
Yes. Better keep winning with it. Needs good… what did Barrett call it?
SHANE
Juju?
ILYA
[Snaps] Yes, this is it! The pride tape needs good juju.
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of a thin, black Moleskin journal. White TEXT layover reads “Journal”.
Switch to CAMERA A center shot of Ilya picking up the journal, moving the band keeping it closed, and flipping through the pages. Shane moves his left hand behind Ilya, appearing to rub his back.
ILYA
Well, last time Shane brought journals. This time, I brought mine.
Switch to CAMERA B, left close-up shot of the journal in Ilya’s hand. The logo for the Irina Foundation is pressed into the cover.
ILYA
I started seeing a therapist this year. Like my mother, I was struggling with depression.
Switch to CAMERA A, center shot.
ILYA
Was very hard for me to talk about, even with Shane. I was scared he would think I was weak or not worthy of him, but eventually, I told him. Of course, he is good guy, everyone knows this except me apparently, so he did not dump my ass.
SHANE
It was really hard to hear that Ilya had been struggling with something that I couldn’t help him with, and that he had been scared to tell me. But, I realized it wasn’t about me.
ILYA
[Shaking head] Was not. And now, is my goal to talk more about my own struggles, so others are less scared, too.
ILYA
Anyways, this journal is part of my therapy.
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of close-up shots of a stainless steel pan from several angles. White TEXT layover reads “Cooking Pan”.
Switch to CAMERA A center shot of Shane pulling the pan from underneath the table and placing it in front of them. Ilya smiles delightedly.
SHANE
You didn’t expect this one, did you?
ILYA
No, you surprised me. You brought one of my cooking pans?
SHANE
Well, technically, it’s ours.
ILYA
When was last time you used this?
SHANE
That’s kind of the point. My essential is actually you cooking for me.
ILYA
When you let me.
SHANE
I let you cook for me plenty!
ILYA
More than past. Not enough.
SHANE
I am seriously regretting this.
SHANE
Ilya cooks for me, it’s very nice, next thing.
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of close-up shots of mesh, cherry red, three-inch Reebok athletic shorts. White TEXT layover reads “Athletic Shorts”.
Switch to CAMERA A center shot of Shane catching the shorts and looking at them confusedly. Ilya takes them from Shane’s hands, and holds them up to the camera.
ILYA
Ah, yes. No lube or sexy photos allowed, but you said nothing about shorts.
SHANE
Why are my shorts one of your essentials?
ILYA
Is obvious. Your ass looks very good in them. That is essential to me.
SHANE
I hate you.
ILYA
You do not hate me. You famously love me.
SHANE
You are a menace.
ILYA
Yes, you love that, too. Makes me very good at hockey.
TITLE CARD, BACKGROUND is a video clip of close-up shots of two black wedding bands with gold interiors from several angles. White TEXT layover reads “Wedding rings”.
Switch to CAMERA A center shot of both men holding up their hands.
SHANE
I don’t want to take it off. I’m worried something will happen to it.
ILYA
During games, I put mine on my chain, next to my cross.
SHANE
I got a chain to put it on during games, too. I couldn’t come up with another solution that felt safe enough.
Switch to CAMERA B, left close-up shot of their hands.
SHANE
We’ve talked about getting ring tattoos one day, like some other guys have.
Switch to CAMERA A, center shot.
ILYA
Shane bought the rings. He did a good job, they are not boring.
SHANE
I wanted something simple, that would go with everything, since we’re going to wear them for the rest of our lives.
ILYA
That is very sweet, Hollander. See, I said you are big sap.
SHANE
Is that better or worse than being boring?
ILYA
Is much better. I am a big sap, too.
SHANE
That’s us, I guess, just a couple of saps.
ILYA
Married saps.
SHANE
Yeah, married. That part’s important.
Switch to CAMERA A center shot of Shane and Ilya with all of their essentials in front of them.
ILYA
Thank you, GQ. These are our ten things we cannot live without—not including each other. But I think this is obvious.
SHANE
I hope you all enjoyed watching and learning a little bit more about us, and make sure to catch us on the ice this year!
