Caleb expects to be let go once he stands. What he does not expect is to be drawn into an embrace, pulled against his old friend’s chest and held there like he is something precious. Broad fingers brush through his hair before coming to rest on the back of his neck. From behind, a slighter hand alights on his hip, other arm sliding around his waist, as Astrid hooks her chin on his shoulder. For a moment, they just hold him there, gentler than a creature like him deserves. The rise and fall of Eadwulf’s breathing is almost enough to lull him into a sense of safety. Once, this was a common way to calm him down.
Astrid noses at his ear, kissing the side of his neck in apology.
“Come home with us?” she asks.
