"It went…very well."

Notes:

The first time I saw that scene in SU, I immediately saw an idea so ta-da!

I hope I got the “I don’t know what romantic love feels like so I’m overwhelmed by knowing what it feels like now” type vibe I tried setting.

Also I headcannon that instead of blushing like humans, gems shine. That is heavily incorporated in this Fic!!!

Anygay hope you enjoy!

Work Text:

“Log date; 7 15 2, today I attempted fusion with the perma-fusion known as Garnet.”

“It went…very well.”

‘Let’s fuse’

Peridot felt her face brighten, and tried shaking the thoughts away. Currently, she was working with Pearl on the drill to stop the cluster. However, she couldn’t focus. She kept thinking back to what Garnet suggested.

To what it entailed.

‘Let’s fuse’

She shook her head again, violently.

She couldn’t get her face to stop shining, it was reflecting on the drill and if Pearl noticed she would throw a fit.

She took a breath like Steven taught her and decided that tonight was enough. She jumped off her pedestal and went to the barn to sit on the hay.

She looked up at the stars, at space, her home–or previous one. She’s a crystal gem now, and even now she still can’t seem to comprehend it all. She stared at them, hoping they might help her form answers.

Fusion…’ she thought.

Fusion…was something she was not familiar with. She knows of fusion, has seen other gems fuse before. Whether it was for battle–like an amethyst with an amethyst–or for other means.

Garnet…was for other means.

And she…couldn’t understand that.

There wasn’t anything to be gained from something like that. They didn’t benefit from doing fusion, so what was the point? She couldn’t wrap her head around it.

“Peridot,” she flinched as she heard her name. She turned to see the cause of her confusion.

‘Let’s fuse’

Peridot grumbled as she hid her face, feeling it shine. She felt the hay sink beside her as Garnet sat.

“You’re haphazard.”

“What…?” she grumbled out, another confusion added to her long list.

“Just learned it,” Garnet said simply, “it means something is lacking obvious principle of organization.”

“Oh,” was all Peridot could say. It really had her tuned in that this was just one word out of thousands on this planet she had yet to learn.

“What’s wrong?” Garnet asked.

Peridot sunk into herself, holding her legs as she hid her face in her knees.

“It’s just…I still don’t understand,” she murmured.

“Understand what?”

‘Let’s fuse’

“Understand…fusion…” Peridot said, before looking up to see the others reaction.

“That’s alright, you still took that extra step to understand me, I already told you I was proud,” Garnet said simply, a soft edge taking her tone.

“But—!” Peridot started, yet her speech left her.

Garnet simply patted her head, and was about to walk away.

“W-Wait!”

Garnet felt a tug on her arm, and she turned to see Peridot’s shining face.

“I…I want to try again, with the fusion,” Peridot stammered shyly, face bright and shining.

Garnet merely smiled.

“Remember, you can back out whenever you want,” Garnet said, watching as Peridot stood with her stilts and hugging herself.

“N…no, I’m good,” Peridot murmured, tightening her hold on herself as she shyly looked up at Garnet. Even with the stilts on, Garnet was much taller than her.

It made this feel even more intimidating.

“Alright,” Garnet said monotone, reaching her hand out for Peridot to take.

Peridot’s face shined brightly, shyly taking Garnet’s hand.

She held her breath as Garnet pulled her into her embrace gently. Twirling her until she felt her back hit the other's chest. Encasing her with her body, she felt as if she could hide.

“Get ready,” Garnet whispered to her side, making shivers go up her spine. She gripped tightly onto Garnet’s hands, silently preparing for whatever's to come.

Slowly, Garnet twirled her around and dipped her gently. Anytime Garnet had moved or shifted her hands, Peridot felt the leftover warmth. She could only muster little ‘eeps’ out of her mouth.

She was going to initiate fusion.

In the other way!

Garnet lifted her so she was facing the other, too shy to look her in the eyes, Peridot kept her head down. She made a meep when she felt the large hands suddenly glide over to her hips and grip.

She finally mustered the courage to look up at her, the shine from her face reflecting off Garnet’s.

The shine was getting brighter.

Almost too bright.

And before she knew it, white evaded her vision. Coming with a whirling sound she’s only ever heard a few times.

—

She didn’t know where she was–or scratch that, she did know where she was, but was slightly dizzy. She didn’t know who she was, yet she felt enamored. She was laying on the grass, and everything she felt seemed bipolar.

She opened her eyes, she felt safe yet insecure. She loved the breeze, yet felt it could push her over.

Zoisite. Her name was Zoisite.

Her vitiligo skin made up of purple and green colors, with evergreen eyes. Her four arms and two legs, and her untamed hair.

She was perfect. Yet she felt wrong.

She felt confident. Yet she felt insecure.

Peridot was nervous, she felt scared, she felt…

She felt loved.

It was almost drowning her with how much love she felt. Like a warm hug, she felt like she was loved. That she could love herself. No–that someone's love for her showed just how much she could love herself.

It felt…enthralling. She felt like she could let go and drift.

Zoisite could feel her.

She could feel Zoisite.

This was new, this was different. Peridot’s never felt this before. Garnet is this feeling, but Peridot shivered at the feeling.

Suddenly, like water was dumped on her, her mind jolted. Zoisite felt scared, too scared to continue her wish of exploring more.

They unfused.

Peridot scampered up into a sitting position in the grass, meekly watching as Garnet grinned huge. She felt her face shining bright.

“Peridot you did it!” Garnet cheered.

“But I—! I didn’t hold it for long…” Peridot uttered.

“But you held a fusion regardless, even when you didn’t understand, even when you felt nervous,” Garnet explained.

Peridot stayed silent, looking at Garnet. She knew why Garnet was always fused now. She can’t say she understands why the gems fusing her feel that way–but now she knows.

“So…” Garnet started, “what did you think?”

“It was…” Peridot thought, “nice. It felt nice.”

Garnet smiled.

Peridot smiled back.

“Log date; 7 15 2, today I attempted fusion with the perma-fusion known as Garnet.”

“It went…very well.”

“I was able to gain a solid understanding of why Perma-fusions fuse for the other reason, which is for love. Fusion creates a connection that symbiotes their love into a being of pure love. When fusing with Garnet, I not only felt what they felt but also what I felt and how we felt about each other.”

“Fusion is quite interesting in that regard, however I chickened out and thus ended the fusion of ‘Zoisite’ early.”

“Someday I wish to return to this topic with Garnet.”

“And I hope to learn more about fusion.”

“End tape.”

I hope you enjoyed!
