Chapter Text
It was hard to focus when the whole world seemed hell-bent on drowning out your senses.
Everything was coming undone. The heavens were breaking apart, white cracks splintering against dark, foreboding skies.
Dampness stained your cheeks, but there was no effort from your end to wipe it away. A hard acceptance had cooled within the confines of your chest. You stepped forward, head lifting in a final display of courage, to seal the bargain.
However, you were anything but courageous. You were scared. Terrified. Was this how it all would end? Was this to be your last breath? Your jaws came to a stuttering close. You went to swallow, only to find your mouth completely dry. It became difficult to breathe; you pushed your lungs to move.
You were faintly aware of the figures behind you, watching, waiting in apprehension.
Would tears be shed on your behalf? Would you be missed? A part of you liked to think that your deed would live on, possibly your name, but the other part of you knew you would be forgotten in due time. Like most heroic tales in history, you would become a work of fiction, lost to the waves; faded by the sun.
If it meant saving their lives, though, you would embrace those consequences. You can’t have success without sacrifice. Old things had to go to make space for new beginnings, it’s just how life worked.
You would make way for them.
After everything they’ve gone through . . . after everything they’ve done for you . . . there’s no way you’re letting their journey end here.
Not if you could alter the outcome.
