Chapter Text
E.B Glover always tries to understand all the children she meets even if she doesn’t see them often as their social worker they are her responsibility, she has a hole list of their favorite things to get them small presents based on their interests seeing their eyes shine when they open their presents makes her happy especially if they came from a bad home.
But not all of them would open up so quickly or even open up at all making it harder to find a gift, but she won’t push not wanting to scare them they end up telling he eventually. One of those kids, Billy Batson has never shared anything about himself no one could get through to him, 10 year and she didn’t even know his favorite color she suspects it to be red considering the fact he always has a red sweater on, but maybe it was just the cheapest thing he could find…
She caught herself staring at him and quickly looked away not wanted to scare him, he wouldn’t admit it if it did and she wouldn’t know. Clearing her throat she looked back at him “Nice to see you again Billy, would you like some candy?” she patiently waited for his response with a soft smile. With a huff he shook his head he seems angry? Tired? Whatever it was he didn’t direct it towards her.
“Alright then, I just want to remind you Billy, you don’t need to worry I’m not sending you back if you don’t want to. You can tell me if anything happens, ok.” smile still on her face even though he’s not looking at her opting to look out at the raining clouds through the window. “Do you think there’s gonna be a thunderstorm?” yeah she didn’t understand him at all.
“Billy this is your last chance you have to stay with a family or be sent to juvie. I have a family that might be able to take you in, but you have to promise you’ll stay.” There was a loud thunder strike nearby causing her to flinch while the kid stayed still. “Do you think that was Zeus?” Her smile dropped replaced by a look of worry “ Bill this is serious please focus with me.”
“…ok”
…
This is her last chance and she won’t screw it. Billy doesn’t really have a choice this time it’s either a family or juvie, and Glover is making sure he stays with this family. She had to pull a bunch of strings but she finally got them, the Vasquez family will be perfect for Billy she hopes at least…
Billy might have agreed, but quickly left to stand outside. He’s really sticking to the mysterious persona maybe he’s just really interested in weather whatever it was she had an important meeting she had to prepare. Ignoring his antics she cleared her desk and got the file with Batson’s name on it.
Fear and hope we’re fighting over control she didn’t let either take over she needed to stay professional even if this is the last chance. The couple in-front of her were patient and vibrating with excited to meet their new foster child.
“Thank you for meeting me, Mr. and Mrs. Vasquez it-” “Sorry to cut you off but just Rosa and Victor is fine.” She paused for a moment before continuing “Ok Rosa, Victor thank you again for agreeing to meet.” The smile on their faces seem to keep growing as she spoke. “So about Billy, he's not a rude person the opposite actually, I think he just doesn’t want… or like being around people” Talking about Billy proved to be a challenge its like trying to make up a fake personality and describe it in the same time.
They looked at each other before Victor spoke up “You sound unsure, does he not like talking?” This wasn’t the first time people questioned Billy and it wasn’t the first time she didn’t have an answer. “Selective mutism, and honestly I don’t know anything about him. He doesn’t open up-” “ I think talking to Billy would be easier for all of us, he can take his time talking or writing whatever he prefers.” said Rosa full of joy
Talking to Billy is worse then trying to describe him, she tried to warn them “He uh… he isn’t really reliable when answering questions he just ignores me most times.” The two paused as they were getting up Rosa just waved her hand “It’s ok we’ve dealt with kids with speech difficulties.”
He did talk a bit with her maybe he’ll realize they’re ok with his selective mutism and warm up to them Glover sighed as she got up and walked them to where Billy was.
“Ah there you are Billy. Meet Rosa and Victor Vasquez they’ll be taking you in.” He looked up at her then the two standing close behind and gave them a smile. “hmm.” Was the only verbal response he gave, before turning to the window again. Was playing in the rain for an hour not enough.
“Hello Billy, do you like the rain? I like it when it rains a little.” Rosa seemed like a pro talking to kids, but Billy was a pro at being a mystery. Glover left them to have their one sided conversation after she saw him turn to them.
Maybe she finally found the perfect family.
