    Steve’s eyebrows continue to raise in surprise as he keeps reading:

    You will need to lay it on top of the gate, and it will dissolve into its being, making itself invisible to the naked eye. Only then will you be guarded from lost souls, excluding that of your one true love.”

    Steve slams the book closed as the front door slams open, but he hesitates when he tries to hide it, and he’s not fast enough. Eddie drops his basket, scattering mushrooms all over the floor, and stands there staring at the book in Steve’s hands slackjawed.
