Work Text:
"Do you have a New Years resolution?"
He can't be serious.
You sit up a bit to be able to face him better, pulling your feet away from where they were resting in Cassandras lap.
"What kind of fucking resolution could I even have in here? Go to the gym more often?"
Tim doesn't even look phased at your angry tone, responding as if you were having a normal conversation. "You could have a fun one! Like trying a new food every week. Or, you know, to stop rejecting your family."
You roll your eyes and lie back down. Cassandra doesn't waste any time in pulling your legs back on top of her, gently caressing your calves. You let her, but only because you already tried kicking her off earlier and it didn't work.
"It's not like I can just go to a store and get new food," you completely ignore the second part of what he said, not wanting to start another discussion about who your family is or isn't, "and I know you're going to say Oooh but you can just ask one of us to get it for you, but then how will I know what food I want to try at all if I can't even see it in person first? I'll stick with not having a resolution, thanks."
"Fine, whatever. My resolution is to find more hobbies for you that you can actually do and would think are fun. We should get your screen time down" He sits down next to your head and boops your nose, successfully evading your attempt at biting his finger off. "Cass, do you have a resolution?"
She thinks for a second, her hand stilling on your leg. "...more family time."
You know what she means. She's been wanting to introduce you to Barbara and Stephanie, who you've heard a bit about, but Bruce wants to wait before 'overwhelming' you with too many people. As if that would make a difference. Kidnapped is kidnapped. But it's not like you're itching to meet more people who'll support keeping you trapped here, everyone you've already met is bad enough.
Tim smiles at you. "See? Now that's a resolution!"
Addressing Cassandra again, he says: "You should go. Your shift is starting soon and you still need to get dressed."
Cassandra grumbles, reluctantly lifts your legs off of her and gets up.
Everyone is taking shifts tonight. For crime fighting, the New Years party downstairs (the noise of which you're blissfully sheltered from on this floor), and babysitting you. You don't know who's doing what in which order though, it's always a surprise who's coming through the door next. You'll probably be stuck with Tim for a while now, though. Unless maybe you can get out of it somehow...
"You know what?" You twist your head to look Tim in the eyes. "I know it's New Years and all, but I should go to bed already. It's not like I'm missing out on much, the party is happening without me anyways. And I'm super tired already, I've been more tired than usual all day!"
Cassandra turns back to you from where she was almost out through the door, her hand on the doorknob, ready to pull it open. "Liar."
The door opens and shuts behind her.
You should have waited until she was gone, dammit. You should have remembered her ability to read body language like a book. Sometimes she lets your lies slide, but apparently she isn't in the mood for that tonight.
Tim grins down at you. "Sorry, but you're not getting out of here before midnight. And even if you were tired, you could just sleep here and we'd wake you up in time for the countdown!"
You just roll your eyes. "Can we at least watch TV until then?"
He wordlessly hands you the remote.
Hell yeah. All of the news channels are blocked and you can't watch anything that's more than PG-13, but that still leaves you with enough content to make for a nice distraction.
You put on a random channel. There's some kind of anime movie on. Ghibli, maybe? You've never known a lot about that, but you've heard that they're good. Whatever, you'll just watch that.
But before you can concentrate on what's happening on TV, your eyes are distracted by the door opening, bringing some muffled noises of the party with it. Did Cassandra forget something in here?
No. It's Bruce.
He's wearing a fancy suit, so he must be coming from the party downstairs. Or maybe he just returned from patrol and has changed into party clothes already? You turn your eyes back to the screen.
"How are you holding up in here? Everything okay?" He lingers in the doorway.
"Um, I'm trying to watch this... So if you would leave, that would be very much appreciated... And take Tim with you, thanks. Close the door behind you." You hug a pillow to your chest and keep your eyes on the TV, even if Tim turned the volume all the way down the second the door opened, you can still guess what's happening.
Bruce ignores you and looks at Tim instead, who immediately responds: "We're good! I'm going to sneak some food from the party upstairs later so we won't starve, if that's what you're worried about."
"Good. That's... good. I'll check in again later around midnight. Nobody will think it's weird if Bruce Wayne sneaks away from his own party at that time, so we'll be able to spend some time together."
He's so weird. Why is he like this?
"Talking about yourself in the third person again there, Brucie?" You make eye contact with him for the first time tonight.
Once again, he ignores what you're saying, but you can tell he's pleased that you're looking at him, even if he doesn't like you calling him Brucie. "I'll see you later. Have fun together, you two."
He leaves the room, closing the door and shutting out the quiet noise of the party that was able to float in through the opening.
You sit in blissful silence, that's only broken by the quiet chatter on TV, for a few minutes until Tim ruins the rest of your evening, bringing something up that you hadn't even considered so far: "Have you picked someone to be your New Year's kiss yet?"
Maybe your resolution should be an escape attempt. Or even better, a murder attempt.
