Work Text:
"You're absolutely sure this is going to work, right Cole?" Jay questioned from his chair. The noiret nodded.
"Look, I saw Nya Smith, the Nya Smith, the most fearless girl alive -- your words -- quite literally clutching your arm when the Temple of Fragile Foundations was collapsing," Cole stated, taking a lollipop from his mouth and waving it around as he spoke. "Listen, Nya doesn't show any emotion besides confidence, not even to Kai. She also very clearly likes you back. So, it's not as big of a deal as you're making it out to be, because why wouldn't she say yes?" Jay glared at his friend, not knowing if he was serious or not. Cole just shrugged and popped the lollipop back into his mouth, before returning his attention to sketching out a design that Jay had requested.
The ginger had probably liked Nya since the moment he knew she existed. That feeling only intensified when he actually got to know her, and even further when they became teammates. The thing is, Jay was an absolute coward -- in Kai's and Cole's opinions at least -- and it had taken forever for the latter to convince Jay to even consider asking Nya to the prom, let alone actually deciding to. But, he achieved his goal, and now Jay was working towards doing it with Cole's help.
"Is this okay?" Cole asked, flipping the sketchbook around to face Jay, showing the design he had done. "I know it's not exactly what you wanted, but I had to adjust the theme a little to fit it to the dimensions you wanted." The ginger's eyes lit up and he nodded vigorously.
"Can you make it into a letter-sized format?" Jay requested, leading to Cole rolling his eyes but smiling as he started to work.
This may turn out great after all.
---
It was not going great. At all.
Apparently, Cole had fucked up big time and slipped the letter asking Nya to meet Jay in the community park at 4 into Kai's locker. Of all the damn people in the world, it had to be Kai.
So now Jay was hiding behind a bush, trying to avoid Kai's search attempts for Jay. The ginger knew Nya's brother was overprotective of her, but what the hell!
"You good, or..?" A voice said from beside Jay. He nodded absent-mindedly, before doing a double-take on how the voice sounded.
He whipped his head to the side, nearly jumping out of his skin when he whispered, "Nya!? Uhm-uh what're, what're you, uh, doing here?"
"Cole sent an 'SOS at park, Jay hiding from Kai' text, so I came ASAP, and it looks like he was right," she observed Kai through cracks in the bush. "So, mind telling me why he's on your ass?"
"ImighthavebeenplanningtoaskyoutopromandaskedColetoslipaletterintoyourlocker, buthatlettergotputinKai'slockerinsteadsonowhewantstokillme."
"Huh?"
Jay took a deep breath. This was it. The moment he had endlessly been working on with Cole for these past few weeks.
"Nya?" He hesitantly asked. The noirette nodded her head, signifying that she was listening and for him to continue. "Uh, I've been meaning to ask you this lately, but, uhm, willyouperhapsgotothepromwithme?" He rushed the last part and buried his face in the orange scarf he had around his neck, just waiting for the imminent rejection. However, what he expected was not reality.
Instead, Nya looked at him, smiled, and -- somehow, very calmly -- said, "I'd love to."
Jay smiled back, lifting his head out of his scarf. He enjoyed this small moment of happiness.
That is, until he smelled something burning. And felt something burning. Looking down, he realized his jacket was on fire. Unfortunately, Jay did not do well with fire, and before Nya could bring some water over from the pond, he jumped up and threw the jack off of him, stomping on it to put out the fire. 'Where did that..? Oh.' Jay's eyes widened in realization.
'Oh no.'
"Found you, Jay Walker," Kai snarled.
"Jay?" Nya said, still sitting down.
Jay gulped, "Yeah-huh?"
"Run."
---
"Are you sure it isn't visible?"
"Nah, you still look handsome. Besides, I might have something to make you feel better." Jay's eyebrows shot up in question as Nya led him further into the crowded room. Eventually, the two reached the section reserved for tables, and headed for the one Lloyd had saved for them when he first got there. Sitting beside the blonde were Zane and Cole, and standing off to the side was Kai, who looked seriously annoyed.
"Kai~" Nya cooed, catching her older brother by surprise. "Remember what you promised? Go do it. Now." She dropped the cheery facade and turned into something downright terrifying, but somehow Jay found it attractive.
"Fine," Kai grumbled, then stepping up to Jay.
The ginger, on the other hand, was pretty scared. I mean, the guy in front of him had socked him in the face three days ago and gave him a black eye so bad that Jay had to borrow some of Nya's concealer. Concealer!
"Look," Kai sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, "I sincerely apologize for hitting you in the face last time we saw each other." Jay could tell the brunette was saying it through gritted teeth, but he didn't care. All he saw was a hothead being forced to apologize for something he didn't regret, and by his younger sister, no less.
Jay smiled, the fear fading away quickly, and quipped, "Well, if the all-mighty Kai is done apologizing, can we begin the partying? After all, this is our first prom night, and we only get two!" The ginger walked past the taller figure, patting him on the shoulder as he did so.
"So, was I right, or was I right?" Cole asked from his seat at the table, glancing up from his phone to look at Jay. He groaned, and muttered a small 'yes.' The noiret seemed satisfied with that, and so he stood up, stretched, and the group began their 'twice in a lifetime' night.
Needless to say, it was pretty spectacular.
And Jay found that it was even better when he had the girl he loved right by his side.
