That Which We Look For

Summary:

Huh? You still don't know? Then, think about it a little more. If you remember the time we've spent together, you'll definitely reach the answer on your own. The same way I have...

Chapter 1: Shooting Star 🌠

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Ah, look... Just as I expected. It's a shooting star...

More importantly, shouldn't you think of something to wish for? You don't have much time left.

So, how was it? Were you able to think of anything?

You really wasted your chance on a wish like that? Something so ordinary and boring... And on top of that, completely useless.

I mean, isn't that right? After all, all I ever do is cause you trouble, but... Even if you don't go out of your way to wish for it, if you'll still be with me... There's no way I'd leave your side.

Really... What a wasted opportunity. If you could have wished for anything in this world, I thought you would have wished for something more grand, but... I guess it doesn't matter, huh? In the end, it's just an old superstition. Without the talent to realize that wish, this kind of motivator means nothing...

But, at the very least... It was pretty, right? I see this all the time when I'm staring at the night sky, so it's gotten stale at this point... But, since I have someone else with me this time, it was a little refreshing. The first time I saw a shooting star, I probably had a reaction similar to yours... I wonder when that was. I don't remember anymore...

Huh? I didn't wish for anything. You might think it's worth your time and look forward to tomorrow... But, it's impertinent of me to have any dreams or ambitions, so I'll leave that to you. You...

No, you're right. There's still the present. And since I get to spend it with you... I'm really lucky. Then, I guess there really isn't anything I need to wish for after all!

Let's head back, shall we? It's dangerous at night, so it's not good to overstay. You never know what could be hiding in the dark...

You think so? But, I didn't do anything special. It's not like I made that shooting star fall, and most of all... You're staying with me the whole time, so you're definitely more unlucky than otherwise. Still, it's no doubt a very positive outlook. Maybe even reckless, all things considered... But if something like that can make you happy, I'm glad you're that reckless!

So, I should be the one saying that. Thank you…

Notes:

So, I have my main fanfiction project, where I may or may not know how to write prose, but it takes me a lot of brain power. Additionally, I've always wanted to experiment with the idea of Komaeda being the narrator in a story, as if he was telling the story to someone. This lends well to second person narration, but the issue is that it's difficult to find a scenario where Komaeda will tell a story about you to you unless you don't remember or something, but it's awkward so then I was trying to write drafts for scenarios where maybe Komaeda would be telling a spooky story to you, but what ended up happening was all events popping to mind were wholesome... So there goes my horror, but I decided to milk it for what it's worth anyway since it's good warm-ups for Komaeda yapping. I posted this on Tumblr since I feel like it has a lot of similarly short content, though I guess it's rare for said content to be like the script of Komaeda speaking to you to the point not even I really know how to describe it to anyone. But anyway Komaeda is yapping, these snippets will normally be short, the goal is it being recognizable as Komaeda and also the events are not in chronological order. Everything else I'm more or less leaving up to imagination or interpretation unless anything is revealed later down the line...

I decided to post on AO3 realizing that this might be some kind of series by itself, and because I might as well. For this chapter in particular, I was inspired by that one anime magazine spread where Komaeda is talking about how he can't read by the balcony at night without being distracted by meteor showers, and I thought that was goofy so I applied the same principle here. Reader has no talent, and I contemplated some kind of contradictory or complex feelings in the moment of this scene, including what Komaeda might have been planning or thinking with the outing, but I feel like it's more on-brand for Komaeda if there was a level of ambiguity to what they were, so I'll leave it at that. Thank you for your time!
