Chapter 1: aahhh! diagnosis!

Chapter Text

Yuu sighs, sinking into the seat of the lunchroom’s tables. They’re already tired from the day, and it felt like there was no way they’d be able to make it through the rest of the day like this. They’d almost fallen asleep during History of Magic (which, thankfully, Trein-sensei didn’t notice since they were so busy teaching), and god forbid they almost tripped twice in P.E class.

Ace and Deuce were settled next to them, with Trey, Cater, and Grim seated on the other side. They had started a conversation as usual about Riddle’s strict behavior (though Trey argues that he’s been getting more lenient) and all the annoying homework the teachers put them through. Yuu didn’t bother, as they were usually arguments and not worth listening to. They put their head down in their arms and shut their eyes for a moment, though even if they were fighting, their voices were kind of… soothing.

“……weird! Like a health condition that’s uncurable!……” Was the last thing they managed to hear before conking out.

“…Yuu. Hey, Yuu!” They heard the annoyingly familiar voice of their dormmate, Grim, practically yelling into their ear to wake them up.

“Mmmnh…” Yuu groaned as they sat up, rubbing the sleep from their eyes.

That wasn’t very refreshing, they thought.

“We’re gonna be late for class. You were asleep the whole lunch hour,” Deuce speaks up, already standing next to Ace, who was tapping away at his phone.

“S.. sorry,” Yuu mutters, getting up. For some reason, it felt like they were more sleepy than before, and that they were going to collapse on the spot.

‘Probably just the consequences of staying up to study,’ Yuu thought it was.
Yuu was a lot more wrong than they thought they were.

——

After school, Yuu finally was able to head back to Ramshackle, hopefully for a nap—

Though they weren’t.

Ace complained about not being able to understand the material from one of the classes, and Yuu being the pushover they are, agreed to help Ace (and Deuce, who had spoken up about it a little later) out. So, they all headed for Heartslabyul and went off to study in the rose garden.

They picked out this nice little spot under a tree with the perfect amount of shade, and got to work there. Yuu taught them everything they understood from the lesson, and they shared notes, and it was sort of overall a pretty fun time. It was chill, it was nice and warm out too, there was a nice quiet, and Yuu didn’t feel.. as sleepy (or so they thought).

Yuu had left the two to work by themselves as they finished their own homework, which was fairly easy. Just a few simple written questions on the lesson and a worksheet, which Yuu (thankfully) breezed through.

Of course, Grim was off napping under the sun, as he usually does.

.

Right now, a nap doesn’t sound all that bad….

After all, they’ve been sleeping less because they’ve been too busy studying, and that lunchtime nap wasn’t all that nice. Here, in the soft grass and the warm weather and this… surprisingly.. comfortable tree were all kind of just yelling their name to sleep, you know?

Maybe… resting their head for a little while wouldn’t hurt.

Nor would shutting their eyes.

Nor would.. falling asleep…

. . . . .

“There they go again…” Deuce mumbles, watching as Yuu drifts off into Dreamland again. “They’ve been falling asleep everywhere. This has been going on for, like, two weeks now. Shouldn’t we at least be a little worried, Ace?”

Ace looks over Deuce’s shoulder to, in fact, find Yuu sleeping. “I mean… maybe. They might just be studying! After all, finals are soon, right? Maybe they’re just up at night studying longer.”

“I… I don’t know, Ace. Maybe we should get that Ignihyde robot to scan them. You know, the cool, nice one who’s the brother of the housewarden.” Deuce mentions, scratching the back of his neck when he gets to a particularly confusing problem on the worksheet.

“You mean Ortho-san? The one in 1-C?”

“Mhm, that one. I hear he’s like, good at being able to tell what’s wrong with someone.”

“Eeehh…”

“……-san. Yuu-san?” A familiar housewarden’s voice echoes in Yuu’s ears.

“…Riddle-senpai..?” Yuu mumbles, and then realizes it’s Housewarden Riddle. “Ah, Riddle-senpai!” They shoot up from where they were lying down.”

“A.. are you okay? I hope I didn’t interrupt anything…” Riddle shyly asks, noting how tense Yuu got when they saw him.

“A-ahh, no! It was just so nice here, I just decided to take a nap! You’re not interrupting anything!” Yuu blurts, hoping it was enough of an excuse.

“Ah, that’s okay. Trey has told me he likes to take naps out here, too.” He extends his arm to help Yuu up. Yuu takes it, dusting themselves off.

“Where did Deuce and Ace go…?”

“Ah, they’re tending to the hedgehogs. Today was their turn to do so.” Riddle responds with a smile, as Yuu realizes they said that out loud. “They seemed quite worried about you. Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah! I’m just, uh.” Yuu tries to find a better explanation, because clearly ‘I like taking naps’ would be very out of character for a student like Yuu. “A narcoleptic!”

. . .

Great response, Yuu.

“Ah. I.. I see. My apologies for imposing…” Riddle mumbles, a bit embarrassed for ‘getting into Yuu’s personal life’, bowing slightly. “Make sure you leave soon, curfew is only in a few hours.”

“Ah…… right!”

Yuu scrambled back to Ramshackle the fastest they possibly could.

——

The days went by as good as usual, along with… unfortunately more napping than expected, but it’s okay because at least they’re getting everything done!

Though they had started to notice that there was a bit more gossip than usual… even Ace and Deuce were in on it, but when they asked they usually got “Oh, it’s, um, nothing…” or “Nothing you should worry about, Yuu-chan!” Which was suspicious because usually they called them Yuu-san or Yuu-kun.

Even Grim would whisper with them every so and so! Grim was never a gossiper!!!

In the end, they found out when a somewhat classmate of theirs walked up to them when they were by themselves.

Specifically speaking, Ortho from 1-C.

“Hi, Yuu-san! How are you feeling today?” Ortho’s peppy voice sounded the same, and it had that jump it always had, thankfully.

Still, it put Yuu on edge a little.

“I’m, um. Good.” They responded, and Ortho was quick to point out:

“I sensed 94% hesitation in that response! Are you sure you’re doing fine?”

‘How nice of you to point out my flaws, Ortho.’ Yuu thought, but decided on a nicer response.

“Yes, Ortho. I swear.”

“But, you know, I’ve been hearing this rumor about you. Which reminds me as to why I’m here!” Ortho announces.

“About me???” That explains the Ace, Deuce, and Grim situation.

“Yes, about you, Yuu! I have recently heard that some people think you’re narcoleptic! Is that really true?” Ortho asks, as if he probably isn’t actively scanning them for health conditions at this second.

Oh.

Funny for an excuse to become the school’s latest gossip. What did they expect in the first place, Yuu sighed.

“No. It was.. just an excuse I made up. Didn’t think it would spread around, though.”

“Really?” Oh no. “Well, I just did a scan and it tells me you have an 83.245% chance of having narcolepsy!”

There goes Ortho with unauthorized scans of other people again.

.

Wait, what?

That number was concerningly high.

But no! There was no way they were narcoleptic!

“If you would like, we could do a blood test to get better results! I know you may not believe this, but if you do, and you highly likely do, have narcolepsy, it would be useful to report it to the headmage as soon as possible!” Ortho exclaimed, and Yuu was somewhat thankful that Ortho was at least useful.

——

Yuu thought about it for a few days.

Maybe getting a blood test or going to the nurse to have them check would be… mentally useful.

So they did.

They did, in fact, tell ADeucey about it, and they were kind enough to go assist Yuu at least.

It came out positive.

Now, Yuu wasn’t the type to gaslight themselves into thinking something wasn’t true.

It’s just.

This didn’t feel true.

And there was, like, no way. Back at home, Yuu didn’t feel this way!

You can’t develop narcolepsy! Right???
