    Summary

Valerie Hartly didn’t survive to make a mark on the world.

She survived to make rent, to keep her daughter fed, and to wake up every morning in the same apartment so Sera would never have to wonder where home was.

Seattle, isn’t kind to people like her — single mothers, working musicians, women who fell through the cracks and kept going anyway. Valerie lives on West Street, in a second-floor apartment above corner stores and dive bars, where the stairwells smell like detergent and rain and everyone knows who belongs. She plays small gigs, stretches eddies, and builds a life that looks quiet from the outside and hard-won from the inside.

Sera grows up watching everything — how her mom moves through rooms, how adults talk when they think kids aren’t listening, how love is built from consistency instead of promises. She sketches stars, learns the shape of the neighborhood, and slowly ventures outward, where she meets Sandra, another kid learning how to exist inside the cracks of the city.

Judy Alvarez enters their lives later — a braindance editor passing through Seattle after leaving Night City, who recognizes something familiar in Valerie’s quiet resilience and chooses to stay.
