“Alright, looks like we’ve got ourselves a vehicle! I’ll drive.”
“Captain, as the singular person who has previously experienced your driving skills, I strongly object to the assertion that you are the best option in this case. It would be prudent to allow someone with a more…methodical approach to handle the task.”
“Now wait just a minute! At least I’ve tried driving before! You’ve never even gotten behind a wheel!”
“If I may interject, Cap’n, Mister Spock…ya need someone that understands machinery and engineering when setting yerself to a job like this. I’m no expert on Old Earth mechanics, but there’s certain things that translate from one machine to another. Let me have a go.”
“You ask me, these crazy contraptions aren’t worth the risk of breaking your neck anyway. If it was my decision, we’d walk the whole way and forget the whole blasted thing.”
“Oh come on now, Bones, it’s not so bad once you get used to having to physically manhandle the controls—“
“Captain, I really must insist that you allow myself or Mister Scott to-“
Ahem
The four of them turned to look at the fifth person in their midst. She had watched in silence as the argument unfolded, and now that she had their attention, she gave them a singularly unimpressed look. “As the only member of this group who grew up in the twentieth and twenty first centuries, and has actually obtained a driver’s license in the past even if it is pretty far out of date at this point…I’ll drive.” She punctuated this statement with an outstretched hand, and gave the captain an expectant eyebrow.
Kirk hesitated for a beat, but he knew a sound argument when he heard one. No matter how much he wanted to try getting behind a wheel again, he wasn’t about to risk the safety of his friends for the sake of his pride—not if there was someone with legitimate experience to choose from. With a charming smile and a gracious nod, he handed over the keys. She smiled back. “Thank you, Captain. Now,” she started moving for the door, “Spock gets shotgun, of course. I’ll take no arguments about that. You three get the back seat—you’d better figure out who’s sitting in the middle.”
It was a slightly cramped ride with three fully grown men squeezed into the back of a small car, especially for the captain, who had taken the center seat out of respect for Doctor McCoy’s age and Scotty’s more…hearty figure.
It was, however, a smooth and safely handled ride, which is what was truly important in the end.
