“I don’t know about this, kitten,” Roger said with a sigh.
“Come on, Uncle Roger!” Brimming with her usual enthusiasm, Carolyn slipped her arm through Roger’s and tugged. “It’ll be fun. Besides, it’s not like you never come here. Vicky mentioned seeing you here with Mr. Evans the other day.”
“Mm.” That was certainly true, although Roger would much prefer never to speak to Sam Evans again. “It’s simply not a very high class establishment, that’s all.”
“Exactly, which is why it’s so fun!” Not to be deterred by common sense or respectability, Carolyn dragged Roger towards the unimpressive institution that was the Blue Whale. “We can even dance!”
“Absolutely not.” Fighting a smile, Roger let himself be pulled into the smoky, crowded building. “My dear, I am a pillar of the community, and as such can hardly let myself be seen dancing in the local bar.”
Protests aside, after a few more pleasing glances and enthusiasm from his niece, Roger found himself dancing in the local bar. As rather jarringly modern music played repeatedly on the jukebox, Roger joined Carolyn on the dance floor to “grove to some tunes”, as she called it.
Annoyingly enough, it really was fun.
