Work Text:
There was something special about being indoors while it snowed outside. Something about being within the warm walls of your own home, curled up beneath a blanket with your loved one, safe from the biting winds and damp flakes that just made the heart feel warm. Emily shuffled slightly in her position where her back pressed against your side, fixing the blanket over her knees. You watched as Sergio hopped up into the newly free space at his mother’s feet and curled up there, preventing Emily from returning to her prior position. You simply adjusted your arm, giving her a better angle to rest her head at. Emily was reading a book that was frankly too complicated for you to want to spend your energy on when it was supposed to be your day off, preferring instead to watch your favourite TV show. Sure you’d seen it a dozen times before, but that didn’t change anything. You’d always love it.
“Are you sure you don’t have the lines to this memorised by now?” Emily asked after a moment, turning her head to look at the screen, lips pursed with thought as she decided whether or not she’d seen this moment before in your prior watches.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if I did. At least some of the episodes.” You replied with a simple one shouldered shrug, leaving the other still so as to not disturb your girlfriend where she rested against it. She hummed absently, watching the show for a moment before she turned back to her book.
Something outside fell over in the wind, startling Sergio into jumping down from the sofa, and you watched as he skittered away. He’d be fine, he was going to get under your bed and stay there for a few minutes if you’d learned anything from the last time it’d been slightly stormy. Emily leaned forwards, hands resting against the arm of the sofa to look out of the window to see what it was, but eventually decided that either it didn’t matter or she didn’t care, and settled back against you again.
“The show is pretty at least.” She mused, glancing over at the dusty fireplace that sat at the heart of the room. Well, the side of the room, but you would argue it was the heart of the vibes. Emily stared at it for a moment, with that look in her eye you’d come to know well, before she hauled herself up from the sofa and crossed the room to inspect it more closely. You’d bought the supplies to light it a while back, but had never gotten around to it. Apparently, Emily had decided the time was now. You watched out of the corner of your eye as she worked on adding logs to the fire, and setting everything else up (you had no idea what it took to build a fire in a fireplace, you’d never done it before, you just blindly trusted Emily beacuse she was usually right). Soon enough, you looked over from the TV and there it was, a small fire starting to burn.
She watched for a moment, squatted down beside the fireplace as the flames grew larger and healthier, and one she was content Emily stood and padded back over to return to your side on the sofa. Sergio reappeared once she was sat, curling up in front of the fire to allow it to warm him. The faint crackling of the fire added to the cosy atmosphere in the room, and the smell of it was oddly comforting. You lifted your arm so Emily could curl up at your side, smiling down at her. You pressed a kiss to the top of her head, and closed for your eyes only for a moment.
When you opened them again, some time had clearly passed, and Emily’s head was still tucked against you with her book in hand. The clock on the wall ticked harder, the way it did when it hit the hour, and you glanced over. Midnight.
“Merry Christmas Emily.” You murmured tiredly, making her glance up with a fond smile.
“Merry Christmas.” She replied, leaning up to press a soft kiss to your lips.
