    Robby had never been one to believe in fate.

    Miracles, maybe. There had been the occasional rare case, outcomes the textbooks couldn’t explain. Likely good medicine and human resilience defined through divinity. But still, he could believe in miracles. Even just to believe in something.

    But not fate. Until he met Dennis Whitaker.

     
    Dennis Whitaker had always seemed to believe in fate. In God’s plan, a path already forged for him to follow, everything in his life having a purpose, a reason. The belief had faded when he’d left Nebraska, as many things had.

    He had thought that if anything would return his belief in fate, in the divine, it might be working in the ED. Saving patients, witnessing miracles. The worst days of people’s lives, the moment God would step in and shield his sheep from the wolves.

    Dennis had been wrong. The ED didn’t return his belief.

    He found himself believing in Dr. Robby.

     
    Or Robby wanted to be whatever Dennis needed. And Dennis let him.
