“Don’t tell me you’re one of them.”
“Life’s transactional, Evan.” Barty fiddled with the glass in his hands, his gaze lowered. “Everything you do comes with a price, and it’s all about whether you’re willing to pay it. Some prices, I don’t know if I have pockets deep enough.”

“Do you ever just feel like you know everything but nothing at the same time?” Barty asked, his head falling onto his own shoulder as he met Evan’s eyes.
“What do you mean?”
“Every ball, every event, every day, even, is all for the same cause, and I know every outcome. Yet, I still feel like I don’t know what’s going to happen at all. I just search for the variable that makes me confused.”
“Have you found it?” Evan glanced back up.
“Perhaps.”
