passing notes

Summary:

Athena's having a hard time focusing on her work. Vera is, technically, helping.

Work Text:

Athena stretched her arms above her head with a sigh. It felt like days had passed since she'd sat down to go over some case files, but her watch claimed that it had only been two hours. She'd been cooped up too much lately and she was itching to get outside and do something, but she needed to finish this before tomorrow and it was already the afternoon. The day always flew right by when she had things she needed to get done.

Vera was sitting on the other side of the couch, bent over a sketchbook, strands of blue hair hanging over her face. Having someone else there doing work of their own helped Athena get into the mindset she needed, but it didn't make her want to do work. She tried adjusting how she was sitting on the couch, which let her read a few more sentences, but soon enough she was back to zoning out. Their apartment had popcorn ceilings, and it was way too easy to get distracted looking for pictures in the bumps and valleys. That one looked like a goose…

Maybe something else needed to change. Her ponytail was one possible culprit; it had been up for a while now, and maybe her scalp needed a break. She tugged at the ribbon, struggling to loosen it for a moment before it suddenly came free all at once, hair cascading down around her face and shoulder. She spluttered, spitting hair out of her mouth as she pushed it back to lie around her back instead. She loved her long hair, but sometimes she was overcome with the desire to hack it all off for being annoying.

She heard a quiet laugh and looked up to find Vera watching her from the other side of the couch, nose wrinkled in amusement. She shook her head a few times, letting her own (significantly shorter) hair whip back and forth. Athena didn't mind being the butt of the joke sometimes - not when she knew it was all in good fun - but that didn't mean she'd let it stand without some pushback!

She scrabbled around on the coffee table until she found a piece of paper she didn't need and flipped it over to write What? on the back. She handed it over to Vera, who took it and immediately started in on it with her own pen before giving it back.

It was a rough sketch of Athena with her hair down standing next to Bigfoot, the two figures drawn in the same pose. Athena caught Vera's eye and stuck her tongue out at her before writing My hair's not THAT bad!!! and passing it back over again.

Vera, nose still scrunched up, replied with a picture of a towering stack of papers, a law book, and an alarm clock.

YOU get back to work! Athena added a kissy face and a heart next to the words to make it clear that she was just teasing.

Vera read the note and nodded, closing her eyes in mock solemnity. She didn't add anything further, just put the piece of paper back down on the coffee table where either of them could grab it again if they wanted, and stared pointedly at her sketchbook. Athena debated the merits of crumpling another piece of paper into a ball and throwing it at her, just for fun, but it would probably devolve into a paper fight and she really did need to get this done and Vera had a deadline coming up and the smart thing to do would be to leave further teasing until later. Taking a little break with her girlfriend had helped to clear her head, so it was significantly easier to get back into her reading. And maybe, if they both finished quickly enough, they could find something fun to do afterwards…
