I crawled into my own bed, letting the phone's glow fill my retinas until weird afterimages drifted across the wall. The room hummed with Sums' quiet, uneven breathing. She breathed like her body was fighting to pull air from a world that didn’t want her anymore. I thought about lying beside her and just holding her until the pain diluted enough for her to forget it ever happened at all, but I didn’t. Instead, I remained in bed and watched her, the way people watch a dying animal at the zoo when it’s too sad to keep pretending it’s not dying. And I told myself I’d make the dying stop.
