Dougie finally had time to rest after a long day of hanging out with Matt. The fatigue took over, his body refusing to cooperate any further. His eyes lazily scanned his phone as a notification popped up.
Matt had messaged him.
What could he possibly want right now?
"Get on Fortnite."
"Didn't we spend all day together?"
"So? Get on. I'm not asking."
Dougie rolled his eyes before getting set up. His entire body ached, but Fortnite was important enough to suffer through. Once his game loaded, he joined Matt's party and entered the voice channel.
"Just couldn't get enough of me, huh?" he teased, browsing his locker for a skin to use.
"I guess you could say that," Matt replied, doing the same.
Dougie settled on the Marty McFly skin because he thought it would be funny. He laughed as he finalized his selection, watching the familiar movie character move around on screen. With that teal virtual idol's backpack and a bass guitar for a pickaxe, Dougie was ready to go. He hit the yellow Ready button on the bottom of his screen, making his character emote while Matt finalized his selection. Matt went for a different approach, dressing like the teal-haired virtual idol that Dougie got his backpack from. Her signature twintails and bright eyes graced the screen as Matt made her emote.
"Hatsune Miku? You're really going to wear the brightest skin in the game, aren't you?"
"Dougie, you think you're so fucking hilarious wearing the Marty skin, don't you?"
"I do."
Matt made Miku shake her head as he hit the same button to ready up. They loaded into the lobby, waiting for the game to start.
"Emote with me, Matt!"
They stood next to each other and did the Miku Miku Beam emote until the real game started. It was a typical round of Reload: one could revive as long as at least one teammate stayed alive.
Fortunately for Matt and Dougie, they were unreasonably good at the game. Unfortunately for the rest of the teams, there would be no killing Matt or Dougie. Despite their playful bickering, they were a solid team. As long as they shared a common goal, they were inseparable and unstoppable.
"Where to?"
Matt thought for a second before answering. "Lizard Links."
They both jumped from the Battle Bus, slowly making their way towards the ground. Matt-sune Miku stuck out like a sore thumb in the desert surroundings, while Dougie McFly blended in nicely. The pair searched high and low, seeking weapons and shield potions.
Once they both reached full shield and decent loot, they took off towards the center of the map. They finally encountered an enemy team. Dougie marked the distant pair, alerting Matt of their location. Dougie, being the better of the two with long-range weapons, took the first shot with his sniper.
Headshot!
The player fell to the ground, their health quickly diminishing. Matt aimed for the downed player while Dougie reloaded, hoping to eliminate them both. Dougie hit the teammate, though it didn't knock them down immediately. Matt and Dougie both aimed for the still-standing teammate, hoping to knock them before the teammate had a chance to revive. Sure enough, the screen flashed with the familiar Enemy Team Eliminated! banner.
At the same time, however, Miku's bright hair led another team to their location. They had nowhere to hide as the on-screen visual effects alerted them to footsteps nearby. It was Matt's time to shine as the duo's close-range legend. With their shotguns at the ready, the enemy team stood no chance against Dougie McFly and Matt-sune Miku. With another team down, they moved on.
The match went by slowly: one knocked player here, a few critical hits there. Once the final storm circle hit, however, it was time to get serious. Two players who had been dominating the kill feed the entire game were left, forced to go up against the bassists. Reloads had ended a while ago, preventing players from respawning. It was two against two, and all four of them wanted that sweet Victory Royale.
The pair took some time to heal and reload their weapons when they were caught off guard by one of the opposing players. Matt was hit from afar, his character falling to her knees and crawling. Dougie was worried about Matt, his heart racing as if Matt had fallen to his knees in real life. The footsteps approached, and Dougie was ready. There was no time to revive Matt, and they both knew that. Dougie, with nothing but a green Ranger Shotgun and a dream, aimed for the intruder. He hit a headshot, knocking the player down. He promptly eliminated them, but their success was short-lived. The teammates tried to avenge the fallen, only to take their own fall and take fall damage. Matt's character returned to her feet as the Victory Royale banner appeared, so the pair emoted together. Laughs erupted from the pair as they took in the joy of their win. Despite the stats that flashed across their screen, those didn't matter. Dougie didn't care about how many headshots he hit or how much health he lost the entire match. He cared about Matt. He cared about their friendship.
"Are you tired after today? Wanna call it a night?"
"No, Matt. I don't," he replied, returning to the lobby. He quickly browsed the item shop, looking for nothing in particular, when all of a sudden—
"Snow Miku! She's in the shop!"
They both got unreasonably excited as they purchased her bundle, quickly equipping her gear and trying her emote. They laughed about it, making Dougie completely forget about how tired he was just twenty minutes ago. They ultimately played five more rounds before officially calling it a night.
Matt-sune Miku and Miku Poynter won every single match that night with laughter and friendship shining through.
