Chapter Text
Shane’s fear of the dentist was not a new thing.
Ever since he was a child, Yuna and David struggled to get him to go. The first time he went, the car ride there ended in screaming and a lot of tears from little Shane, but the promise of a lollipop and a movie thankfully managed to convince him to go inside. Granted, he was still extremely stressed, but Yuna was grateful that her son was so easily satisfied. Even in his teenage years, his parents both found themselves scrambling to get Shane to the dentist, a process which often involved a lot of secrecy and planning. Once Shane was old enough to make his own appointments (but not old enough to keep them a secret) he kept putting them off, claiming he was busy or that the dentist had moved the appointment, until one of his parents would get a phone call about the lack of Shane at the office.
Naturally, getting his wisdom teeth removed was a huge thing for him.
It was the day of his wisdom teeth appointment and Yuna could see that her son was stressed as ever. These last couple of months had been difficult for him in general and she imagined that this was taking an extra toll on him. Shane was a grown man and could take care of himself, yes, but he was still her son. Yuna was glad that she had some time off to help him recover in Montreal.
“We leave at 11 right?”
She nodded, “Yep. The clinic is only half an hour away and your appointment is 12.”
“Cool.”
Yuna tilted her head to get a better look at Shane’s face, “If I promise you some candy and a movie will you feel better about going?”
Shane laughed, “Sure, Mom,” he opened his mouth again, looking as if he was going to say something before stopping.
“It’s ok.”
“Mom,” Shane turned to her. She noticed a look in his eyes that hadn’t really been there before. It was a kind of fear, but not a fear that she was used to seeing in him, “When you got your shoulder surgery and Dad couldn’t be there, how did you..deal with that?”
Ahhh so that’s what this was about.
Shane had been (more openly) attached to Ilya’s hip ever since the man came to visit Shane at his cottage. Yuna knew that while Shane was more comfortable now with Ilya being his boyfriend and existing in the same space as his parents, the incident was still fresh and he still had some anxiety surrounding it.
She sat down next to him, “I’m going to be honest, it was like hell on earth for me. He texted me as much as humanly possible and stayed on the phone with me as my friend drove me to surgery, but it wasn’t the same as having him there and holding my hand,” She laughed, fondly remembering the memory, “And you bet he took care of me so well afterwards. Your father is just wonderful in that way.”
Shane nodded, a look of love mixed with disappointment crossing his face. Yuna began to speak again, “You don’t have to tell me what this is about,” she squeezed his shoulder, “But I have a feeling I know. Call him.”
Shane nodded again and got up off the couch, picking up his phone to call the aforementioned Rozanov. Yuna smiled at the fact that the phone picked up on the first ring. She left for him to talk and went to clean out the car for their upcoming trip.

Shane went under pretty easily, but that didn’t remove the anxiety Yuna felt as a mother. Thankfully there were no complications and the trip home was easy. She and David fed Shane his meds and tucked him under the couch covers before giving him some space. Until Yuna heard a knock at the door. She went to answer it, her eyes widening at who had been knocking.
It was Ilya.
“Hi, Mrs. Hollander. I do not mean to overstep, but-”
“No, no. You’re not intruding or anything, and call me Yuna. Shane will be over the moon to see you,” Yuna gestured to the couch, “Sit down. He’ll probably be awake momentarily.”
“Thank you,” Ilya sat down in the chair next to a sleeping Shane.
“I don’t mean for this to come across as rude but, how did you get here?” David asked, leaning against the counter.
“Is not rude, is good question,” Ilya replied, “Nothing fancy. I drove.”
“You drove,” The confusion was clear in her voice and she was right for it, because what did he mean he drove? He was two hours away and had practice and games back to back.
“Yes. Shane wanted me to be here, I drive,” Ilya said this as if it was the simplest thing on Earth, “He is..scared of dentist and teeth things. I knew he was getting surgery today and wanted to be here earlier, but practice ran over and I couldn’t leave until much later."
Their conversation was paused as a very loopy Shane had woken up from his nap on the couch.
“Hiii Mom! Hiii Dad!!! Hiiiiii Ilya- wait am I dreaming? I’m in heaven, ohhhh my god-”
“Less talking honey, you just got teeth taken out,” Yuna stood and moved to stand behind Shane, “You are very much on Earth. Look who came to see you.”
Shane’s eyes lit up at the realization that Ilya was real and very much here. He reached out for him almost as if he was going to get up, but Ilya reached out first.
“Hi,” Shane put his hands on Ilya’s cheeks, “You’re prettyyyy. And you came to see me! My pretty boyfriend came to seeeeee meeee I’m the luckiest ever in the world!”
Yuna could see a faint blush on Ilya’s cheeks, “Yes, sweetheart, I came to see you.”
“But how?”
“Had some time and I drove. I will always make time for you, Shane, especially when you are scared.”
Shane nodded and quickly laid back against the couch, giving Ilya the heart eyes of a lovesick puppy. He talked on and on about whatever he could on the meds he was on and Ilya just didn’t care. He stroked her son’s hair like it was the most natural thing and held his hand, listening to his incoherent rambles as if her son was inventing a new language. The love he held for Shane was even clearer now.
Eventually, Shane fell back asleep but Ilya just stayed there, letting him hold onto him and petting his hair.
“When do you need to head back?” Yuna asked
“Tomorrow at 10.” Yuna nodded and placed a blanket on the chair next to Shane, “Blankets are here. You’re welcome in our hearts to stay over and I sure he wouldn’t mind either.”
Ilya nodded, partially processing her words but clearly all his attention was focused on caring for her son.
Yuna retreated to her and David’s shared bedroom and shut the door. The love that Ilya had for Shane was clear.
